For some reason I’m really itching to throw an end-of-summer party. I’m thinking of renting a fire pit out by one of the local lakes here, getting a big ol’ fire going, and having a weenie and marshmallow roast. The last few nights have been quite chilly so I thought the fire would be a nice idea. We’d have blankets and a big ol’ canister of hot water so we could have hot chocolate too.
Does this sound like it would be fun? I’m kind of outdoorsy and solitary, so what I consider fun compared to what others think is not always the same. I wouldn’t want to set up some big shindig and then have nobody come.
That sounds like a lot of fun to me! But then again, maybe I’m biased because our family did that all the time when I was a kid, complete with Von Trapp-style singalongs of such well-known campfire songs as the theme from “Gilligan’s Island.” Also, for optimal fun, make sure that someone brings along a large shaggy dog to bark a lot and generally wreak havoc on the proceedings.
I only wish I could come! It not only sounds like a whole lot of fun, it sounds like the parties we used to have, back before everyone got married and had kids and became lazy and boring. Go for it!
If the site doesn’t have a shelter, a good-sized canopy is nice in case of rain. Warm cocktails – hot toddy, Irish whiskey, etc. – can be especially delightful on chilly evenings. Camp chairs that can be placed aroung the fire beat sitting on the ground or being stuck at a picnic table. Keep in mind it’s often easy to use two to three times as much wood as you think you need.
I think it sounds fun! I’d leave out the dog, bring bug repellant, and add liqour to the hot chocolate. Wish I could come! I love a good bonfire, especially on the beach!
It would be instant…with powdered milk already in it…don’t tell…
The consensus looks good! Now to just plan it.
The good thing is bug repellant will not be necessary…our nights are now chilly enough that they aren’t out anymore. I went for a walk through the bush the other day and there were no skeeters, not even flies.
I like Gary T’s suggestion of warm alcoholic drinks…maybe I’ll bring along some Bailey’s and Grand Marnier for those that want to add it to their hot chocos…
Good plan! No one will miss the milk if there’s liqueur. Ask people to bring graham crackers and hershey bars too, for s’mores. and to bring a wire coathanger to roast marshmallows. Hot cider mix works great too.
We used to have campfire gatherings on the beach at night in december, to watch the boat parade, boats all decorated with lights.
