Those three examples are all wildly different. And all three are easily answered, at least in their own words (Caitlyn Jenner, for example, is a woman, not “claiming to be something she isn’t”).

I agree with your overall point, but I’ve been researching my ancestry, and I found my grandfather’s Ellis Island record with a different version of his name. I’d looked for him a number of years ago (because I wasn’t sure if he had come through Ellis Island or not) and I didn’t find him doing a search by name.
More recently, I looked through their records using the name of the ship he came over in (I knew it because my sister was named after the ship), found its arrival on the day before his official immigration record date, and browsed through the passenger list. And I found him. Eight letters in his entire name, and they got two of them wrong. Heh. But he didn’t keep the misspelled version, so your point is still right.
Just to be clear, my point wasn’t that it never happened, just that it, and NA ancestry, is the most likely thing about “family lore” to be wrong.
He probably called her “Pocohontas” because it fits the cliche: that somebody falsely claiming to have Native American ancestry will usually claim to be descended from an “Indian princess.”
More likely, it’s the only NA female name he knew. Surprised he didn’t call her a squaw.
Name 5 famous Native American women. Once you get past Pocahontas and Sacagawea, most of us draw a blank. Warren has been often dubbed “Fauxcahontas” by her detractors.
