Does Your Dog Howl At The Moon?

I ask because none of my canines have ebver done that! I was on the declk last night, and the dog and I were sitting together…watching the beautiful harvest moon rise. He was definately watching it…I could see him watching with evident interest…Damn! I’d love to know waht was going on in his brain! What he thought the moon was, etc.
But as for howling, is this strictly a wolf thing?

Well, I don’t know about dogs but my god howls at the moon all the time.

Alaskan Malamutes howl. And I have a friend whose bloodhound has a different kind of howl: shorter blasts.

Ours howl when they hear sirens. But I’ve never noticed one howling at the moon.

Every few days we have a barkfest in the morning. #1 dog Sasha (the most barkative* of the bunch) starts barking. Bouncer joins in with a combination of barks and howls. Ivan will then start “singing” (a rather musical sort of yipping/howling combination.) 4th dog Cammie has never been into the barking thing much, and she’ll just run over to be petted.

They’ll bark/howl for 2 or 3 minutes, and then just stop. Or they’ll stop if I tell them “That’s enough.”

It’s kinda fun.

*barkative: a neologism given to us by my semi-nephew. It’s very descriptive, and we’ve adopted it.

I had an ancient Beagle who would howl, very low, during full moons…currently 2 of my dogs will howl after the military jets fly over on practice runs.

No, but one of my border collies howls at the train. Particularly at the 3 AM train. We are not amused.
