Does your Program work? Mine doesn't seem to. (flea remedy suugestions needed)

What, July and no Pit thread on fleas yet? I’m close, but being the mild mannered peevish sort, I thought I’d try this instead.

My dog and three cats took their second dose of Program about 2 weeks ago (a once a month pill that is supposed to kill the next generation of fleas). When I started them on it, I had seen a flea or two sporadically when combing my dog with a flea comb, but not every day. I do all the recommended stuff – wash everything in sight, vacuum constantly and groom the critters like a compulsive chimpanzee. I have also been giving CapStar regularly, which is supposed to kill any fleas on the animal. It may have, but I haven’t seen any dead ones - just big happy live ones.

I just don’t understand it. Our flea problem is much worse than it was when I started them on the Program. All the cats are scratching, I just found two adult fleas wandering around on my dog, and as of this morning they’ve become bold and suicidal enough to hop on me. I knew it would take some time to work, but I did think that by 6 weeks I’d have pretty much seen the last of the l’il bastards.

I checked the expiration date and none of the medicine has come close to expiring. Is anyone else having such terrible luck with this stuff? Is it time to resort to an old fashioned 1920’s style flea bomb? What works for you?

I’ve used Frontline (hated it- it did nothing), Program (better than Frontline, but still not tremendously effective), and Advantage (loved it). After the failed Frontline trial period, I flea-bombed the house and now have the pups on Advantix (Advantage with tick protection) and the cats on Revolution. Both are the back-of-the-critter liquid kind. They all just got their second dose, and there’s nary a flea or tick to be found anywhere. Cost is comparable, as well.
