If someone just tells me I (somehow) took a giant hit of LSD and hallucinated this, I’ll be more than happy to accept it. But last night, I flipped to FOX for a moment and saw a few minutes of The First Annual Ms. Dog Beauty Pageant.
Now, I’ve got no problem with dog shows, I’m a big dog fan and I enjoy watching those once in a while. This was a beauty pageant. The dogs were wearing dresses (green seemed to be quite popular) and there were two vapid idiots commenting on it and appearing to take the proceedings seriously. One was John O’Hurley, who Seinfeld fans might recognize as Mr. Peterman- I only know him because he’s the spitting image of a teacher I once had, which is an even bigger mindfuck. And when the winner was announced, he sang to her.
So my questions are:
Did I really see this?
Is this (as I assume it must be) really proof that we’re all doomed?
Where did we go wrong?/How did we get to this point?
I really don’t know. I thought FOX had done everything it could to annoy me. But there was something about this show that just left me jabbering. I think it was that they made it impossible to tell if they were really being this stupid, or if they were engaging in self-parody, or parodying something else, or making fun of ME for thinking they’d really be this stupid… see what I mean?
Did anybody who saw the show get this sense?
Yeah! I couldn’t tell if it was supposed to be serious. I think John Hurley was the perfect host, though. The whole evening was very Peterman-esque.
And I hate when people say “The first annual…” It doesn’t become “annual” until the second year! Dumbasses.
But I seriously hope there’s no “Second Annual Miss Dog Beauty Pageant.”
BTW, did you catch some of the reactions of people in the audience? I have a feeling that most of them were people paid to fill the seats (a friend of mine did that for a while on shows like Weakest Link and various talk shows.) I can’t imagine that many people actually being that happy to watch dogs prance around in eveningwear.
