I’ve just had a vague memory and wonder if anyone could refer me to YouTube or suchlike. Sometime in the early 90s (or possibly late 80s), in the United States, there were two or three cartoons, I believe in black and white line drawings, about a family dog. They were played before movies. I particularly remember a scene in which the dog is being fed, and the wet dog food sloooooowly… sluuuuuurps… out… of… the… can, then holds the cylindrical shape when it lands in the dog’s food dish.
They were funny & sad at the same time. Does anyone know what they were and how to find them again?
Yep, that’s the Family Dog. The scene you described is from the original episode that was part of the Spielberg series Amazing Stories.
The original episode was absolutely hilarious and far superior to the series, which had all different voice actors as well as lower quality animation and writing. It was turned into a series in the wake of the Simpsons success, when every network suddenly decided that they needed some primetime animated shows of their own.
The episode was released on videotape along with another Amazing Stories episode.
In addition, the follow-up series was available on home video-- there’s a laserdisc box set, and I seem to recall a low-quality VHS box set. I’d never caught the series, but had enjoyed the Amazing Stories episode, so when I found the LD box set for $4 during the LD blow out of the late 90’s, I picked it up. It’s… pretty crude. Both in quality and in humor. Not bad for $4, but I’m not sure I’d pay much more than that…
They were. I know the cartoon described in the OP, but I couldn’t remember exactly what it was. All I know is that I watched it a million times as a kid, which would suggest that it was on a VHS tape before some other movie.
