Dog Fanciers & Comics Geeks UNITE! And form a giant robot…no-no-no. Wrong uniting. :smack:
Actually, I wanted to know: What breed of dog is Superman’s pet, Krypto the Superdog, modeled after?
As both a comics geek and dog geek who has owned some obscure breeds in her day, the answer is: GOK. (“God Only Knows”) A lot seems to depend on who is drawing him.
I assume this is as early a depiction of Krypto as I’m likely to find. That illustration is clearly based on a Greyhound.
Others I found more closely resembled an old-fashioned uncropped Great Dane, a Labrador, a Pit Bull, and even a Bull Terrier (aside from the profile of the face and the ears). As for the pic in your OP, I’d go with Pit Bull or American Staffordshire Terrier. (Dog geeks, please, let’s not get into the “Am Staffs are not Pit Bills” issue here, please. For the sake of determining the breed of a cartoon dog, they’re similar enough)
He looks like a white terrier of some sort, some people say Jack Russell. I happen to know he is a Kryptonian Purebred of some sort, though the issue where it’s mentioned is buried in my stacks, and neither Elliot S! Maggin’s page nor wikipedia or supermanica say which it is.
Every Krypto I’ve ever seen is a lot bigger than a Jack Russell. I’m not familiar with the version linked by Bosda, but the older versions physically resembled something between a lab (except in white) and a greyhound.
Agree with Chronos. I always liked Krypto. I remember him always being white. I used to have that Legion of Superpets Comic in Selkie’s link, but it’s probably gone now, along with my Giant Lois Lane.
I know that his Space Cananine Patrol Agency name was Air-Dale, but I don’t think that means anything.
I’d always just assumed he was a mutt, actually.
BTW, has anyone done a “Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex” treatment on poor Krypto?
You’d be surprised! In the mid-'90s, Alan Moore (known as the greatest writer in comics) did a comic called Supreme, which was his version of the classic Silver Age Superman. It was a way for him to tell any kind of crazy Superman stories he wanted, without ruffling feathers or deviating from the status quo over at DC Comics. Anyway, Supreme’s version of Krypto was a dog named Radar, and in one of the comics, the flying, super-powered dog tore around the city and “knocked up” every female dog he could find. By the end of the story, Supreme had to contend with hundreds of Radar’s flying, super-powered puppies.
Actually, I was less worried about the puppies, than the effects of Krypto trying to hump some poor schlub’s leg.
So can anyone identify the breeds of Streaky the Supercat, Beppo the Supermonkey or Comet the Superhorse?
yes, I loved Legion of Super Pet stories back in the day.
Krypto is a beautiful example of a pure-bred Kryptonian Slorghound.
I dunno. I grew up with a dalmation, and always thought Krypto looked like one of those if you took away the spots.
I always thought he was a beagle/something mix–he’s built like a beagle more-or-less, but I don’t think beagles come in pure white.
