But that wasn’t all investigating officers discovered. Lanier, under questioning, told police he was certain the .380 Beretta was unloaded, with the magazine tucked safely in the driver’s door panel. A second gun, a .243 rifle, was also in the cab, laying across the seat with its barrel resting on the passenger floor and that too, said Lanier, was unloaded.

Sebring police, however, discovered otherwise. The “.380 Beretta” that shot Lanier was in fact a fully loaded 9mm pistol. And the Marlin XT243 rifle, when police inspected it, was also loaded with three cartridges – two correctly and a third “backward-facing cartridge lodged between the face of the open bolt and the chamber area.”

A close search of the pickup also revealed “empty .243 casings in the ashtray and two partial boxes of unfired .243 ammunition on the passenger floor and under the seat.” Inside the driver’s door pocket, police found "several rounds of unfired .380 ammunition, green tipped ‘zombie killers.’ "

Lanier, the police report said, “acted as if he was confused as to how it may have been loaded” and was unaware the .380 pistol was a different gun altogether.

Loaded a round backward in the rifle, eh?

And the “empty .243 casings in the ashtray and two partial boxes of unfired .243 ammunition on the passenger floor” could mean he was driving around shooting from his vehicle…or…um…no, that’s really the only thing it could mean. I doubt that’s legal.

I don’t think this was an accidental shooting. The poor dog was being fed both dry and canned food. Sometimes the food bowl was loaded correctly, sometimes it wasn’t and sometimes it was completely flipped and there was cat food in there instead.

The dog had the motive, means and opportunity. Maybe he missed once but this ain’t over yet.

Article on Yahoo news yesterday was headlined:

“Who needs friends like these? Dog shoots owner in the leg”

A dog may be man’s best friend, but we’re guessing that Gregory Dale Lanier might take issue with that sentiment after his pooch shot him with a loaded gun.

I’m glad the police collared the suspect. We need to nip these shootings in the bud. The law needs more teeth, IMO.

Say what you will about the .380 cartridge, this fellow learned its bite is worse than its bark. Talk about a ruff day.

And in Jan 2013, a FL dog ran over his owner… that dog also got off scott free.

Clearly FL is just soft on canine crime.
