When did Al Sharpton become the official spokesmodel for African-Americans? Let me rephrase that… my initial post came off as contemptous of Rev. Sharpton, who I generally like. What is it about white celebrities caught out being racist that makes them run particularly to Sharpton? Is it because they know he can get press?

I have no problem with this, as long as they don’t meet at Sylvia’s.

Someone else said it; for good or bad, Sharpton does play to this kind of thing (though I too generally don’t have a problem with him), he can get them air time, and they can be “seen” as able to get Sharpton to listen to the contrition.

Maybe that’s why NZ has yet to produce a successful show about a bounty hunter (though that Lord of the Rings thing did have guys with long blonde hair chasing bling and bad guys so maybe it sort of counts).

I grew up in Australia, but now i live in the US.

With that experience in mind, let me tell you that it’s very hard for an Antipodean to appreciate the cultural weight that the word “nigger” has in the United States unless you study the country closely, or you live here. You just can’t compare it to the way it might be used in countries like Australia and New Zealand where, for the most part, it’s a sort of emulation based on American pop culture (movies, music, etc.), but with little or no understanding of the historical and political significance the term has in America.

I literally can’t think of a word in Australia that’s as fraught with racial tension as “nigger.” I guess some of the more vulgar epithets for Aborigines or Asians (boong, slope-head, etc.) probably come close.

Attorney Brook Hart told The Associated Press that Chapman’s son, Tucker, sent the recording to the tabloid for “a lot of money.”

“I guess because of whatever level of anger he had of his father, he felt the need to express it in that manner,” Hart said.

Tucker was the son who’s black girl friend was the subject of Dog’s diatribe.

If the son is a good guy, not racist, living in a family full of them, and he’s dating a black girl he truly loves and then gets tired of dad’s constant insulting of her and sold the tape, I agree he did good and glad he did it.

But if the son is just as racist as dad, uses the same language, but also just so happnens to have a thing for black chicks, and really loves dad and family and just did this in a moment of anger that now he regrets, then I’m not so sure. If in two days he’s going to think “damn I just fucked myself and family because of a moment of anger against paw, who I really love”, then maybe not the right thing. Granted either way it exposed a bad dude, but it also hurts the entire family, the TV crew, etc, some of which may not feel the way “Dog” does. And if son is racist as well, then he comes out looking good when he shouldn’t. Our friend VCO3 is proof you can dig hot black girls but not be a fan of the race as a whole.
