Doggy Diarrhea: housekeeping and first aid questions

While I was at work today my 15 pound dog had an attack of diarrhea. He actually managed to get some of it on his paper but very little. Some questions:

1- Is there any Immodium like product made for dogs? For his sake and mine I’d like to prevent more of the same.

2- Any tips for how to get rid of the stain and, at least as importantly, the smell?

My dog gets the runs fairly often—usually about once a month. I use an OTC product called Pet Pectillin, and it plugs him up remarkably well.

Buy a rug shampooer, you’ll need it. This won’t be the only time.

I once took care of a dog who had some sort of nervous bowel syndrome when her mommy was away, so I have far more experience with this sort of thing than I ever wanted. Folex spot remover worked amazingly well on my beige carpet, but it does leave behind some sort of residue that attracts dirt for weeks after you use it. I finally got into the habit of cleaning the offending spots with soap and water, spraying the inevitable stain with Folex, and then just steam-cleaning the whole damn carpet after our nervous little guest finally went home.

I use a product called PetZyme to clean up after our cats. I have not had to deal with diarrhea, thank goodness, but other messes it has really cut through odor and stains.

Yep, Folex and PetZyme both work wonders. Here’s the best way I’ve been able to find for removing pee stains from the carpet: first soak up as much of the pee as you can with a diaper. Then spray some PetZyme on it and massage it into the carpet with your fingertips. Give the PetZyme a few hours to let it work, and follow up with the Folex. Works like a charm.

Two things are safe for dogs (and to a lesser extent-cats). 1st is Acidolpholus*, next is a pectin-based product., such as Kaopectate. Try both.

*the active ingredient in Yogurt, and they make a formula for dogs and for cats, but really, you can get regular human grade stuff and it works fine.

My vet gave me a medicine called Endosorb for my dog’s occasional diarrhea. It’s inexpensive, and all I had to do was give him a call, tell them what I needed, and later, I picked up the pills at the office.

They must taste okay, because my dog will eat them with no coaxing or having to stuff them into a chunk of bread to hide them.
