Dogs on beaches in New Jersey

I did what amounted to a shallow search on here for this question, but a search on “beach” gives me a zillion results, and “beach” and “New Jersey” does as well.

I did check Google, too, but that was quite unilluminating.

Here’s the question:

There are a lot of beaches along New Jersey’s coast, and I believe they each follow their own city’s rules in terms of beach regulations (i.e., there’s no overlying New Jersey Beach Regulations list). I would like to know which beaches, if any, permit dogs.

I suspect that some do allow pets, although perhaps not in the same areas that are designated for bathers. But I’m just not sure.

In particular, I’m wondering about the beaches in Ocean City, New Jersey.

I’m asking this here because there are plenty of NJ folk on here who visit the beaches, and someone here might know a little about this.

The reason I’m asking this is that I’m considering spending a long weekend in September at the beach, but I want to bring the dog. I don’t want to leave him home; I think the ocean air would be good for him, as would the wide-open spaces of a beach (as opposed to the apartment in which he lives).

There are some hotels/houses/b&bs that allow pets, but I’m more concerned with the beaches themselves. Wouldn’t be much fun if we all went to the beach but had to leave the dog in the house.

Dan, I am 99% sure that dogs are not allowed on Ocean City Beaches.

Most of Cape May County beaches, and Atlantic County beaches have similar guidelines = no pets.

Ocean City tourism?? Could you find them anywhere on web?

800-227-2297

Cape May County Department of Tourism.

They should provide an answer.

I found their tourism site, but no mention of pets on beaches.

Thanks for the number. I’ll call when I get phone service back.

Or more specifically, ocean City: 800-232-2465

800-232-2465 prompts for mailing info so they can send a brochure.

Okay, per Ocean City Police Department: No dogs or pets are allowed on Ocean City Beaches, round the clock.

Ocean City, NJ 24 Hour Police non-emergency: 609.399.9111

Again, thanks. I was going to call anyway if information was not discovered by other means. Which is, of course, why I posted here, since there are Jerseyites who might have first-hand experience.

dantheman,

I don’t know about NJ beaches, but if you can’t find a pet-friendly beach there the National Park portion of Assateague (sp?) Island south of Ocean City Maryland is pet-friendly. At least, when I was there a few weeks ago I saw many dogs running loose, and no one was complaining. They are strictly verboten in the State Park portion, but if you go a little farther south into the Natl Park you should be OK. Possible alternative.

Assateague is a great idea, but one reason I like OC so much (the NJ one, not the MD one) is because it has a nice, clean, fun boardwalk.

Here I am in MD now, but it’s the NJ beaches I prefer. Go figger!

I’m not sure about Ocean City, but I will say that I’ve noticed that the dog police are out in force when I go to the beach with my dog. I’ve even gotten a ticket. (Surf City. I think it might be the only beach on LBI that doesn’t allow dogs.)

By September, though, it seems that the poop patrol eases up a little.

Don’t know if your dog is a good off lease dog or not, but be careful at the beach if you let her off the leash. They can get lost because they lose their scent due to the ocean.

That’s a good point, meow meow. I don’t think I’d let him off his leash - too much trouble for him to get into. But you can get long, long leashes, and it would be fun for him and for me to run along the beach.
