Ultimately, it’s another opportunity lost for Phil Mickleson that he’ll never get back. Since Phil last won a major, Tiger has won four, Padraig Harrington three and Cabrera two. I woudn’t be surprised if Geoff Ogilvy gets to two this year as well.
The Masters is Phil’s best chance at winning with its wide fairways and little rough. He’s performed much better there than at any other major. He doesn’t have the game for the British, the US Open requires more accuracy than he has, and the PGA is a crapshoot depending on the course.
Phil’s almost 39, and it’s rare for players to win majors past that age. His driver is shaky and he has a power swing - not a smooth one like Kenny Perry or Vijay or Bernhard Langer. He had a couple of bad drives yesterday that ended up in good places because of the way the course is set up. In a US or British Open, he’d have been hacking out for double bogey instead of shooting for the pin.
