Teflon Don can get away with an endless stream of lies and bullshit, but humiliating the media by turning them into dancing monkeys for his free hotel infomercial is something else altogether:
Sounds like some of these guys are mad enough to resort to anything to get even, even engaging in real journalism…
Can they actually make any difference? If their boss wants more “both sides do it” coverage, they gonna say “No” and quit? To do what, bicycle messenger?
The news outlet that pisses off the Trumpiviks loses that advertising revenue, from people selling boner pills, time-shares and online education. From the business perspective, any news outlet that consistently tells the truth is going to be doing that. Your Journalism prof would be proud of you, maybe, but the boys in Accounting are going to have a word with your boss.
Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, its the Truth against the Dollar Almighty. Place your bets.
I do presume that a stylish ecru lambskin gauntlet was hurled to the floor upon utterance of that well-modulated SIR!
I have no doubts that members of the fourth estate are perusing this missive and have by now expostulated “Egads! 'Tis the proper time to engage in Authentic Journalistic Scrivening! To the barricades!”
I believe I understand the OP’s choice of thread title, but it really doesn’t quite work. My impression is that the majority of Trump supporters absolutely love it when he sticks it to the media.
The reporters might be pissed, but they work for network executives, and the executives want a horse race. And really, he does shit like this all the time, so I don’t see the long-term damage unless he treats the press like he treated WaPo by completely cutting access – then there’s a problem.
That said, the decision to string the press along with, of all things, the birther issue is providing Hillary Clinton an obvious opening that she can exploit. One of the reasons why Hillary has fallen as of late is because despite Obama’s rising poll numbers, Hillary has been unable to catch a lift from those numbers. Voters are not connecting her to her former boss (Al Gore 2000 all over again). It’s one thing to taunt Hillary Clinton, who probably won’t get quite the same vote count from African Americans that Obama did. But smearing Obama is not a smart move.
There is one other aspect, and that’s the true dedicated Trumpiviks. There’s polls out there about how many Republicans believe the birth bullshit, don’t recall. Are they gonna feel betrayed?
Yeah, he might come through this OK as long as he doesn’t do anything to keep the feud going, like dishing out payback for erasing his free-informercial tape…
(Sorry, have to quit, my keep-a-straight-face muscles are getting a charley horse.)
Trump’s many, many very recent refusals to say ‘Obama was born in the US’ may cover him with his fans. They’ll be able to tell themselves 'he’s still with us–he just had to bust out that one sentence on September 16th for political reasons, but he still knows Obama is a Kenyan, and by the way wasn’t he smart to get all that free network coverage for his new hotel?’
The people this could hurt Trump with are those undecided voters who are aware that Trump has been playing coy with this topic so recently–to them, this will be an indication that Trump can’t be trusted. The key question is, how many of those undecided voters have been paying enough attention to know how much Trump has been gaming this?
You forget, nobody can see your face on the interwebs. I don’t forget, mostly because I’m so grateful. Its a drag to get pre-emptive restraining orders.
I doubt this hurts his core supporters, who will rationalize this the same way they’ve rationalized his shifty positions with illegal immigration. “Well that’s what he has to say to keep the liberal media off his back.”
However, I do think he risks losing some of the softer, anti-system but slightly less pathological anti-Hillary voters. Trump is now potentially caught in the same trap that Hillary has found herself in at times, trying to explain and clarify his position in multiple interviews. Moreover, it is also getting perilously close to igniting another racial controversy. It’s one of those issues that get strung out over a series of interviews that have the potential to make him look like a racist prick at first and then make him look weak as he tries to find an escape route. This could turn into another Khan family or Judge Curiel moment. It’s a racial issue, and it’s going to take him several interviews to calibrate his position. That’s the last thing he needs after a week in which he basically has nearly pulled even.
My hope is that high-profile African Americans - not just one or two but many - will come out in droves and troll this shit out of Donald Trump over this one. I mean, get people like Samuel L Jackson, Morgan Freeman, Ice Cube, Oprah, Lebron James…get all of them to come out and just say Trump is a sick, bigoted liar who doesn’t deserve a single African American vote. It’s risky, I know, because it can always backfire and celebrities don’t like to mix in politics too often for reasons that are understandable. But these are people who have had a history of political involvement, even if on the periphery, and I hope they do it now.
