I think Trump will shift to the center. He’s going to have a Republican House and Senate to get real change passed.
I’m willing to give him a chance. I want to see what specific policies he pushes before criticizing him.

My reaction? I couldn’t possibly have more contempt for American people right now.
Donald Fucking Trump.
Donald Fucking Trump.
Jesus.
President Donald Fucking Trump.
While the federal elections went terribly from my point of view, if we are talking about personal reactions I’m mostly feeling relief right now that the election is over. I haven’t really been contributing to election threads. But I’ve been reading them and refreshing polls over the last few weeks with an almost manic frenzy. Once it was clear that “all was lost” I’ve been far more calm.
It’s helped that the Washington State and local level items have (mostly) gone my way. Including an expensive but in my opinion important mass transit proposal that I wasn’t optimistic about.
Well, we survived Fillmore through Buchanan, culminating in a civil war. Let’s hope this is less bad than that.
Some time ago I posted an opinion on the dope that my gut feeling was that I thought Hillary Clinton was not likable or charismatic enough to be president and that I did not think she would make it past the primaries. Also I felt round two with yet another Clinton was a pretty high level of hubris. Enough was enough with the Bushes and the Clintons. It was an annoying conceit to be running for president as Clinton round 2. But then she won all her primary battles and I figured my gut was wrong this time. Apparently enough people liked her that she could be elected President. The feeling became even stronger the more Trump revealed himself. How could anyone lose to this jackass?
She had a political machine but she didn’t have likability or charisma at what I felt were required presidential levels. But the machine and her well prepared ground game was moving her forward. I voted for her yesterday afternoon.
Now I really don’t know what to think. I could be angry at all the Trump voters but In fairness when the ball is thrown back in your face like it was last night I think it’s possible that you need to reconsider some of your assumptions. Maybe it’s true that over 50% of the American voters are racist jackasses, but maybe it’s also true the progressives have been living in an echo chamber. The GOP now controls both houses and the Presidency. If demographics is on the Progressive side it sure didn’t seem like it last night. Where were all the women and the minorities and the progressive last night as Trump carried state after state. There were a lot of women voting for Trump regardless of all the stuff that’s been put out there about his behavior. That’s stunning and it speaks to a level of contempt for Hillary Clinton that I did not think existed among female voters. It turns out a lot of people really did hate her, and I mean viscerally hate her.
I really don’t know what to think at this point. This is the greatest upset in American history. PT Barnum is now the President of the United States of America. .

She already has. She rang Trump a while ago to congratulate him.
With respect to legislation, the problem isn’t Trump himself. The problem is Congress.
As long as we had a Dem President, they couldn’t pass their agenda. Now they can.
As I’ve said before, if anyone thinks Trump’s going to be a moderating influence on Paul Ryan & Co., or veto the Ryan budget, I think they’re living in a fantasy world. He won’t pay enough attention to know what he’s signing, but he’ll sign it. He won’t bother himself with the details.
And on the whole, Trump’s pretty much fallen in line with GOP orthodoxy any time there was much daylight in between him and them, for all his populist talk. And forget all that bullshit about Hillary being the candidate of corporate America - the GOP is the party of corporate America at a scale that makes Hillary look like a Marxist by comparison. All the goodies will belong to them.
Bye bye, Roe v. Wade, obviously. We’ll have a lot more baby moochers and takers, only there won’t be a safety net to mooch off of. They’ll fight for you when you’re in the womb, but once you’re out, you’re on your own.
Kiss Obamacare goodbye. Those of you WWC folks who had insurance through either the Exchanges or the Medicaid expansion are gonna have a shockeroo when 2018 rolls around, and it’s all gone. Medicaid’s gonna be block-granted over to the states, and shrunk. Good luck paying Granny’s nursing-home bills on your own, once Medicaid stops picking them up.
Will Trump be able to restrain himself from using the Executive Branch agencies as tools for personal and political revenge? Who knows?
Good luck, eastern Europe. Trump likes Putin more than he likes you.
Minimum wage either stays at $7.25, or gets abolished. I don’t think the latter will happen, but then I didn’t think this day would come. The Executive order raising the pay level below which overtime pay is mandatory - that’s gone.
Medicare and Social Security: Ryan wants to voucherize the one, and partially privatize the other. It may or may not happen, but we shouldn’t even have to worry about this shit. And it’s easier to tear stuff down than to build it back up again.
So fuck you, James Comey. Fuck you, media that couldn’t run enough stories about the emails and the Clinton Foundation - nothingburgers all, but the relentless drumbeat of those stories was the foundation for all the Crooked Hillary talk. And fuck you, Republicans that were outspoken, just a few months ago, about how awful Trump would be, but fell in behind him anyway.
Blame where blame is due.
My reaction: I’m shocked.
Now I expect a four year shit-show. I don’t expect Trump to be a two-term president. I don’t really expect him to be a full-one-term president.
One thing for sure. Stand-up comedy is about to feel another boom.
I also now expect a senate/house swing come 2018.

Hillary sent her email buddy to the podium to “publically” tell her supporters to go home. Hillary has not yet publically accepted the results of this election. Maybe she’s sulking?
Thanks, I needed that.
Yeah, after the damage is done.
I’m not gonna go back and see whatever it was you said.
They stood with the “Lock her up!!” (and worse) shouters.
I’d say 'Fuck ‘em’, but there’s no need; Trump and the GOP will see that they get screwed, good and hard.
Unfortunately, many others who don’t deserve it in the least will be on the receiving end of that screwing as well.
I’m on so many different website right now and losing track of which on is which. I seriously tried to upvote this comment. But I can’t, so I’m just reply with a “good job”.
So people who got the predictions completely wrong are more than willing to start, in this very thread, making NEW predictions which you’ll issue with equal confidence?
I’d love to read someone here say something like, “Based on my utter inability to even understand the factors involved in this election, I’m going to tread very carefully for a little while.”
No. “I was wrong and so let me tell you confidently what will happen now!”
I’m American, and I can see where you’re coming from. But please keep in mind that over 50% of those of us who voted did NOT vote for Trump. Lots of us think he’s horrible and are now appalled that he’s going to be the next Commander in Chief.
I’m just believing what Donald Trump and Paul Ryan have said, and how the GOP Congressional caucus has voted.
I should deny their agency, based on what exactly? I don’t even have contradictory body language to go on.
Oh yeah: the climate is screwed.
It’s official: we are now living in an idiocracy.
Muslims all over are probably paraphrasing the meme from “Airplane!”… “I sure picked a bad time to be a Muslim” – or Mexican, or any other visible minority unfavorably regarded by white supremacists. And all the rest of us are saying that we sure picked a bad time to be in the middle of a resurgence of religious and racial warfare.
On the bright side, Canadians look forward to welcoming a new wave of immigrants from our nearest neighbor – immigrants who can read, write and think coherently, vote on the issues, and contribute to a progressive society. Unfortunately the Canada Immigration website crashed earlier today due to apparent overload, so this will be a challenge.
