Hey! Who asked the gay guy?
Of course not. But it’s more than a little ironic that lee et al. are being judgmental about Disney’s nontraditional take on families and childhood when their own family is also nontraditional in its own way. Glass houses and such, yes?
This my point: their status has no bearing on whether or not their decision to ban Disney from their house has any merit. My illustration asked whether or not, * due to my race/religion/orientation*, I would gain or lose legitimacy in my argument. Not whether or not my argument is inherently legitimate. So by all means attack them for the reasons you mentioned. But their “status” is not germain, so leave it be.
Regarding the Appeal to (their own) Authority:
While “because I said so” carries no weight in an SDMB discussion, they have never stated that anyone else should raise their kids in the same fashion, merely that it was their choice to do so. Had they tried to say that Disney is Evil because They thought so, then I’d agree that such an argument would not work. But all of their arguments have been made in the context of how they are choosing to raise their kid, and they don’t need to answer to anyone, except perhaps the kid in 18 years or so.
They have tried to use such arguments to undescore their right to raise their child as they see fit. I couldn’t say they’ve been horrifically successful, given the length of this thread and the drama within, but I’m choosing to look past the particulars to absorb what I discern to be their underlying point.
FTR, I don’t think Uke’s jab was made with any ill intent, though I agree with goo that such remarks can get extremely irritating. No one likes to be patronized.
Others have already beat me to the response.
I don’t give a shit one way or another about Disney or whether or not Lee and Kelly allow it into their house. I am certain I am not the only one who doesn’t give a shit about their sex life and they would be flattering themselves to believe otherwise.
What I do find annoying is the way they write something for all the world to see and then throw a temper tantrum when someone asks questions. This is by far not the first time these two have done this.
How hard would it have been to explain the “woman sperm” when it was first questioned? The only reason this issue turned into a train wreck was due to the “I’ll have my psychiatrist mail you a copy” and “it’s complex” comments instead of clarifying their words.
Excuse me if I am starting to believe that they get some bizarre thrill of playing the poor, persecuted, alternative marriage, martyrs.
Either that or they need to seriously consider how their written word is being (mis)interpreted by their readers. Most of the time the fault lies in the writer.
I agree it started out this way, but as you pointed out the OP has been derailed.
I predict that this thread will never end.
Nice going Ike
Oh, and Jarbaby? Write my name on the wall.
wring
Nope.
It would be ironic if lee et al. had expressed dislike of Disney because it deviated from traditional family images. All I have seen is that they are not happy because mothers are so often absent. Since “mother present” !== “traditional family structure” I see no irony.
Diane
Yes, but as I have already pointed out, the responses given do not lend support to your claim that "her objection is based upon Disney’s portrayal of “the nuclear family image”.
Do you have any support for that claim?
Perhaps you missed lee’s post clarifying that the sperm originated from a Pre-op MTF transsexual.
Perhaps you also missed my post where I pointed out that said clarification occcured before the complexity remark (which seems clearly directed at issues of gender identity not what chromosome pattern must be shared by sperm producers).
Umm, Diane seeing as djf750’s post was let lie for 3 pages until you referrenced it twice, it looks to me like lee’s “playing the poor, persecuted, alternative marriage, martyrs” is actually your interpretation on their response to your needling.
You say you “[don’t] give a shit about their sex life and they would be flattering themselves to believe otherwise.” yet how come you posted
this
and then one page later
this
I could be misreading, but it seems to me like you thought that their sexual preferences were somehow important, else why did you keep referencing djf750’s post?
Hm. A family that objects so much to the concept of stories they believe to contain a pervasive number of absentee, missing, unmentioned, or deceased mothers that they make sure to have two female parents for their child.
I’m having a hard time finding a contradiction in that. I’m feeling twisted enough at the moment to point out that far from contradicting the stated opinion, they carry through on that principle sufficiently to have a backup mother around in case something mysteriously Disney happens to their child’s plotline.
The OP overreacted slightly to a belittling comment that was supposedly made in good humor.
From there, because the person who made the belittling comment was a moderator the usual suspects lined up to kiss some mod ass. I was annoyed by the thread at that point, but kept my temper.
stofsky apparently decided a pile on wasn’t good enough, so lets throw some good old fashioned ignorance and bigotry on the fire. From that point, several other posters decided they like that flavor so they “kicked it up a notch” BAM!
That is when I got pissed off. This is the fucking Straight Dope, we are supposed to fight ignorance here, not spread it.
At least a few of you who are joining in this lynch mob are better than this, look around you- read some of the comments that have been posted.
Spiritus, lee admitted that the sperm is from a MALE to FEMALE transsexual in which the process is not complete. Which would make it…stay with me…MALE SPERM.
KellyM, still to this very moment maintains it is woman sperm and not until LEE told us two pages later that that is a JOKE, did it make a LICK of sense.
If I came in here and said “Last night my husband impregnated me with his powerful wildebeest semen”, I have no doubt someone would have questions.
The choice is, do I reply evasively? Or explain straight out that “wildebeest semen” is a pet name in my circle of friends?
Well, that explains the temperment of MY daughter.
Well, aren’t you good grendel? Your self-restraint was remarkable…do share with us how you managed.
Actually, while I can’t speak for anyone else, I personally don’t like kissing ‘mod ass’. It wouldn’t have mattered a monkeys-pistle who made the original comment that got lee’s hackles up, I would have defended them because it seemed to me to be an unwarranted overreaction.
You’re the one kissing-arse here grendel72.
No, minty.
Such a narrow reading would be appropriate if I was charging lee and Kelly with hypocrisy, which I certainly am not doing. In fact, I would agree with your narrow reading if hypocrisy was the issue. Irony, however, is a significantly broader concept, and there is a certain amount of irony involved when lee and KellyM criticize an entertainment company’s portrayal of parent-child relationships while (quite justifiably) demanding acceptance of their own parenting system.
Two parents is okay by them, three is just dandy, but one father is intolerable and requires an embargo on Disney products. Huh?
Hey asshole, read the thread again. I didn’t lose my temper until the bigots came out of the woodwork.
You can speak for me on this one, kambuckta. That’s exactly how I feel about it.
To me, this isn’t about who the OP is or who the “offender” was. I don’t care that lee is part of a polyamorous triad, I don’t care that KellyM is transgendered, and I don’t care that Ukulele Ike is a Mod. The whole reason I posted in the first place was to point out (as many have) that the OP is not only an overreaction, but the victim of a pretty bad whooosh.
I started out with a measure of respect for the OP, thinking her overreaction an honest mistake. Subsequent posts have slowly worn that respect away, as she has acted like exactly what she started off complaining about… a Jerk. A complete kneebiter.
What a fucking train wreck.
Shouldn’t Jerry Springer be doing his perfunctory mopup speech right about now?
I called you an arse-kisser dude, didn’t say you lost your temper. In fact I congratulated you on keeping it under such trying circumstances.
Have a nice day grendel.
