"Don't blame me, I did'nt vote for him"

Painted in huge neat letters on the back of a pickup truck I saw yesterday. I think it’s perfect. My guess is that the owner and his friends are all unaware of how “didn’t” is supposed to be spelled.

If I may steal a quote: “Another child left behind…”

I am going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the owner of the pickup truck doesn’t really care.

excavating (for a mind)

Was that phrase in use before Watergate and the “Don’t Blame Me, I’m from Massachusetts” bumper stickers?

Yes, because Massachusetts was the only state that went for McGovern (along with DC)

That’s when the stickers became popular, but was that when the phrase originated?

Well, he tried. It could have been “dint”.

Message on the rear window of a truck I was behind today:

R.I.P. U.S.A.
1776 - 2008

Yup, the Bush administration killed it off before Obama could even get into office, didn’t it?

I haven’t seen it written, but have heard “dint’d”.

I used to be quite an evangelist for the apostrophe, but I’ve since mellowed with age. Like the people sitting at the light across from you who only signal that they are turning left when it goes green, at least they recognize that something is supposed to happen here, even if they aren’t sure what or why.

Clearly the political views and interests of people who misplace apostrophes do not deserve to be taken seriously.

Yes! Thank you! Somebody who gets it!

Clearly the views of anyone who actually paints a juvenile political message on their vehicle does not deserve to be take seriously. Apostrophe aside.

I would bet that “don’t blame me, I voted for the other guy,” was created shortly after the first election ever held.

I wonder if THIS is the same guy?

August, 1974. Backpacking in the Sierras for a week, I parked my car at the trailhead, adorned with the Don’t Blame Me- I Voted For McGovern bumpersticker.
(Bear in mind that McGovern won only ONE state in the presidential election, and many democrats felt vindicated by Nixon’s deliciously drawn-out disgrace so soon thereafter.)

Anyway- a week later I get back to my car and find that someone had used a rock to scrape the word “Don’t” off of the bumper. I enjoyed the illogical absurdity of the angry pro-Nixon vandalism, and left the damage as is for quite a while.
