Don't bother reading this, it's such old news, I'm just annoyed...

People suck.

People are stupid.

People are thoughtless.

People don’t deserve to have the love and the joy and the comfort of God’s finest creature (aka dog) when people are now on the THIRD litter of mixed breed puppies that people are selling to anyone who shows up and gives them $20.

I hate people.

i’ve spent the last 2-3 months heavily involved in Golden Retriever Rescue, because I’m searching for a second dog to be a friend to Maggie and me. In the process I’ve fostered two dogs, and learned the stories of dozens more. Beautiful, smart, loving dogs…dumped by their owners because the owners didn’t have the patience to train them. Tied up in the backyard as a “lesson” for the children, who are supposed to provide food and water. And if they don’t, the dog gets neither. Dumped in the desert and left to die of starvation.

And I see these beautiful, cuddly, irresistable fat puppies lazing around the yard, all ten of them. And I want to take them all. Because I know that this is where rescue work begins, in the homes of assholes like this who, when I say “You, know, you really need to get your dog spayed…” respond “Yeah, she just gets out.” WRONG FUCKING ANSWER, DICKHEAD.

I know, without a scintilla of doubt, that at least half those puppies are going to end up dead or abused inside of a year. Easily. Because people are idiots. They see the sign, think those puppies are irresistable, and pull a $20 out of their pocket, completely in denial about the fact that that puppy is a good 18 months to 2 years away from being their dream dog, and that’s WITH training. So six months from now, when they can’t stand the house being torn up or shit all over the floor, maybe they’ll just open the front door. Or take the dog out to the desert. Or very deliberately and with malice aforethought deliver the dog to the pound and hope that the rescue organizations will save it before it is euthanized. Or convince themselves that the dog is no good anyway and needs to die.

SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR ANIMALS, PEOPLE. PLEASE. YOU CAN GET IT DONE FOR FREE ALMOST ANYWHERE.

And if you don’t, FUCK YOU.

Oh, and one more thing to the asshole with the puppies: even without the breeding festival, you don’t deserve to have a dog, asshole, because your dog shouldn’t be able to get out of your yard. And your dog can get out of your yard anytime she wants, as I saw with my own eyes when she opened the fucking gate and came after me. You fucking ass.

Seconded.

You strike me as the kind of person who might be a good candidate to do this, so why don’t you give 'em a call? I understand they’re local to you. It might or might not be a good way to provide some companionship for Maggie (whom I am assuming is a Golden Retriever), depending on how much time you spend out of the house.

Agreed.

However, I often think about how sad it is that it’s come to the point where we have to neuter/spay our pets. I understand that, as things stand, the humane thing to do is to “fix” your pets. However, isn’t that almost a cruel irony? We now have to do some wholly unnatural (and agruably cruel) things to our pets, just to make up for the fact that we’ve fucked up so badly, and created a problem.

People suck.

It’ll be a good day when people stop treating their pets as toys/security systems/assets/showpieces/money spinners/victims/something to forget/something to ignore.

I’m without pets right now, for the first time in my life, because I feel I have neither the circumstances nor the close love to give to another living being such as a pet. Pets, on the whole, deserve way better than the treatment some get today.

Stoid, Zaphod – hear, hear!

Stoid, I wish there was some place around here we could get neutering done for free, if there is I don’t know about it. My friend now has (part of) a litter of kittens that she’s trying to give away to good homes rather than take to the SPCA. Her cat got out thru the walls in her house. I’d offered to spay it last Xmas :frowning: If I have the money this year, I’ll offer to get it done again. She’s a small cat and I don’t wanna see her hurt by too many pregnancies. (one of my mother’s cats died of an expelled/distended uterus after a couple, that was not pretty.)

Though we never did neuter our male dog, as Dad got him primarily as a deterrent to people who came up bothering Mom when Dad was away, which worked. He didn’t see much point to making the dog less agressive. He’s a teddybear in doggie clothing already  We also tie him outside. People probably think we’re cruel anyways. :sigh: The dog is almost 14 and has had 0 health problems, other than bladder control this last year.

It’s not just about them having puppies (or kittens, for cat people like me). It’s also healthier for animals to be spayed or neutered in the long run. You will also have a better behaved animal, who won’t go into heat. Males shouldn’t spray, they won’t be as agressive, and they’ll be much better to live with.

It’s just common sense.

does anybody know where i can get my cat nuetered for free in houston? i was waiting until i get approved for medicaid because i know of a clinic that provides free/cheap care if you’re getting aid from the state, but it’s been 4 months already, and i need time to see if the cat calms down before the baby is born.

I don’t know specifically any place that does this in Houston (I’m not from Texas), but you might want to check with your local shelter, SPCA or municipal animal welfare. If they don’t do it themselves, they could probably point you in the right direction. There are some organizations that you pay half the neutering fee and they will send you a coupon that will be accpeted as payment by a participating vet (half price is better than full). In my state, one organization is Friends of Animals. I don’t know if they’re a national organization or not.

Try this link:

SNAP is in many areas - where I live, they provide certificates for free or very low cost spaying/neutering

Stoid, I agree completely. I’ve thought of things to post in reply, but I’ve seen far too many examples of the disturbing ways in which people treat animals to even know where to begin.

I’ve rescued more dogs and cats than I can count, managing to find homes for them all, but it’s a steep, uphill battle.
My two favorite arguments I get when I confront people about their treatment of their “pets”:

  1. From the religious types…“God gives us domain over all the beasts of the world, and we can do with them as we see fit.”

OK, fine. I’m not religious, but doesn’t your Bible claim that God has domain over everything? Including you? How would you like to receive the same treatment?

  1. On allowing the family cat or dog to produce a litter…“Well, we just wanted the children to witness the miracle of birth!”

Hey, I know! How about you take the children down to the pound and let them witness the miracle of euthanasia, and see what happens to all of those unwanted animals?

oh, kickass, Dire Wolf! that first url is the website for the place i was talking about that neuters for free if you’re on medicaid. not only had i lost their phone number, but i didn’t know that they had a pay service, too. i could easily afford $15 to get ollie nuetered.

thank you!

** kaylasdad **, I couldn’t be a Puppy Raiser! Are you kidding? Oy… all that work, all that devotion… fall madly in love and then * give it back!!! * I couldn’t stand it. Just yank my heart out and grind it under your boot!

It would be fun, tho. Love the picture of that puppy, WAY too cute with his little bib…

I’m happy to see this thread has reached some folk that it needed to reach. While I’m 100% on the side of neutering cats as well as dogs, randomly breeding cats bother me less, because cats are so much better at going feral successfully. (Cat lovers don’t need to yell at me that cats end up dead and sick, I know that. Like I said, I’m 100% on the side of neutering cats, too. Both of mine are neutered.)

and ** Dire Wolf: ** Good answers! Try this: 1) Do you think God is proud of the way you are treating your animals? “Dominion” does not = “right to abuse”, it means “take responsibility for”. And I don’t think I can do any better than your #2.

Although I’d like to point this out to those who find the idea of euthanizing intolerable: I’d rather see a dog put down than left in the care of an abusive, uncaring owner. A dog won’t know they’re dead, but they sure as hell know when they are miserable.

stoid

No offence or anything, but why did you take on a cat if you cant afford its medical care?

I hope you are keeping its shots up to date, and you know not handle the cat litter if you are pregnant right?
