Don't forget the link. Here's how to post one.

JillGat and CKDextHavn -

You know how some BBs use “announcement” messages at the top of the list to state different rules?

Would it be possible for you to put like a sample of a Cecil/Mailbag link reference in one of those permanent messages at the top of your fora?

The reason is that a lot of the links refered to aren’t clickable, and lots of times there’s no link at all.
Also, lots don’t include Cecil’s title, which makes the post a complete mystery. An example with bolding/link/title all together would help a lot.

Maybe the message could be “Don’t forget the link. Here’s how to post one.” or something like that. Just the words at the top of the list everyday should improve the odds of people remembering.

I know you have other things to do, but it would probably save your time in a day or two.

Thanks for considering it.

Please reference columns you are talking about like this:

That’s like this, but with square brackets wherever you see curly ones.

Cecil’s column:

{url=“http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a3_398b.html”}What is Don McLean’s song “American Pie” all about? (14-May-1993){/url}
Easy way: click on the quote field below and copy.
Don’t forget go back to where you want to comment and paste into your message.
Then edit to fit your refernce.

See, it looks easier than it is. Your link didn’t quite work.

I think you meant:
here

You tried to skip the http:// and it came out

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/www.yahoo.com :frowning:

instead of http://www.yahoo.com

Moderators?

This was a suggestion, followed by an example.

Can I get any official comment? Even a “We don’t really care for that”?

** Thanks for showing us how to do this, Show_Biz ** I had told someone that I didn’t know how to post a link, then weirdly enough, on a thread where a poster asked about where other old dopers were posting. I said that some were at Opal’s forum, and I had the http://www.address from a thread that I had just printed out. Except that I joked, ‘pretend that it’s blue’. So, that’s what I put, and I was SO shocked to go back to that and the link was active!! EXCEPT that I didn’t put the [ or the url+" unless you meant those things didn’t have to be printed.

I thought I’d come in here and give it another try, both the way I did it, and the way you printed it.

We’re still sorting out system bugs and haven’t even begun to get to little refinements yet. Please be patient.

At the present time, we can only use the announcement function to make ONE announcement at any ONE time. We can’t stack 'em up. I’m not even sure if we can use it only one forum and not in others. (This is another bug being worked on.)

And btw, most moderators would just skip over a thread titled like this, not knowing they were supposed to look at something and give you an opinion. We read as much as we can, but we’re not here 24/7 and there’s no one person that reads every post. Well, maybe there is one person that can do that, but they don’t work here. And they don’t sleep much. . .

IMPORTANT: if you want to use “automatic links” put a space in front of it or the software won’t add {url} and {/url}.
