Blueline proofs, “blues” for short. Blues are the last proofs of your pages before they go to press, so called because back in the day they were made directly from the negatives on photo-sensitive paper that turns blue, for one last check before the actual printing plates are made. They smell like an unholy union between nail-polish remover and the formaldehyde your least-favorite science teacher used on specimens. (Technically blues paper used off-gasses acetaldehyde and benzaldehyde, supposedly at levels too low to poison you, but it’s nasty.)

  1. It’s the zone where a piece might bind or fold. If you run an image or copy through this area, it’s called a Gutter Jump.

  2. A typeface is a subset of a font. So Helvetica Neue Bold would be a typeface of the font Helvetica Neue.

  3. A specially designed character that makes common letter pair look good together, such as: ff; ffl; ti… etc.

  4. Its concerns the layout of a multi-paged print piece, and how it needs to be printed on the sheet relative to how it will be bound.

  5. No cyan would give you an odd pinkish-orangish-yellowish sort of duotone look. Not for the faint of heart. You really need that cyan. If you had to kill a color… kill the black. But don’t expect it to look rich and crisp: It’d look muddy.

I took so long because I was preparing the scores for your last set of answers.

I didn’t start out planning to have a pattern it just happened (and I was trying to insert some gimmees once you noticed the pattern), between my trying to think up varying questions and the fact that I’m a natural pattern noticer, starting with the first set about the Keys and Alicia Keys.
