Cake or raised?

Cake donuts can be delicious, (especially glazed or sugar sprinkled,) but there is no matching the delicious beauty of the Tim’s maple dip donut, which is raised.

(Even if you can’t get them fresh at the store anymore because they’re shipped frozen. Sigh.)

I was raised on Dunkin Donuts cake donuts; they’re part of my DNA now. When I moved to the south, all I could get was the Krispy Kreme raised donuts which are okay if someone buys a dozen for the team, but not something I would ever get for myself. Too… insubstantial, I guess. Fortunately DD is expanding quickly in this area so I can get decent donuts again.

I love 'em all, dammit. And my stomach shows it.

Anybody out there besides me call 'em “sinkers”? The buttermilk heavy-duty ones that you dunk in coffee?

And I DO NOT LIKE Dunkin’ Donuts. We have a (real ) bakery in my town that makes THE BEST. Glazed, too

I have to stricktly avoid the place. Until the urge strikes

I’ve had a lot of bad cake donuts. I’ve rarely had a bad raised one.

There was a local chain where I grew up called Montgomery Donuts, which made raised donuts. When I was 7 we moved to a house that was within easy walking distance of their main bakery. I could always find my way home just by following the scent…

It’s almost impossible to find a great cake donut, but when they’re great, they’re better than raised donuts.

Cake by far. If all there are is raised, I’ll go find a bagel somewhere else instead.

Cake doughnuts are an abomination.

The ideal donut is a big, puffy glazed-raised, heated and topped with butter. If done properly it must be eaten with a fork, because it’s too soft and gooey to pick up.

I don’t eat donuts much at all, but my preference is yeast-raised donuts hot out of the fryer. I’m not necessarily talking Krispy Kreme here–they’re way too much on the sweet side for me, but my aunt would make these Polish donuts called oponki (“little tires”) that were just dusted with a bit of powdered sugar. Like American donuts, they can be made cake or yeast-raised. The yeast-raised were perfect and the powdered sugar was just enough sweetness. That said, they do go stale pretty quickly, so get 'em while they’re hot.

Crullers. Or cake donuts with icing. I miss them both.

I’ve never heard the term “raised” before, so I wikipediaed doughnuts. I guess Dunkin’ Donuts are cake and Krispy Kreme are raised? Personally, I prefer jelly-filled. However, I also learned on my wikipedia adventure that doughnuts are deep fried, and now I may never be able to eat one again. So thanks for that.

How did you not know that doughnuts are deep-fried?

This thread is making me hungry. Thanks a lot, guys.

Jelly doughnuts would fall under the “raised” category.

“Mmmmmm, jelly…”

A good raised donut has a bit of yeasty flavor to it, and I love that flavor. But I’ll happily eat either kind.

Most of the time, donuts have too damned much icing or glaze. That’s one reason why I prefer cake–you can get those puppies PLAIN.

I love them both. I love all doughnuts.

Impossible choice. It totally depends on the individual doughnut. For example, a fresh, warm Krispy Kreme raised doughnut is a little slice of heaven. On the other hand, I used to stop by a doughnut factory (ie. they baked for the other shops around town) and get fresh iced blueberry cake doughnuts which were to die for. So, basically, either kind, if done right, are like the bestest thing evah!

I’ve never heard the terms cake or raised donuts before. I just eat them.

My favorite is the Dunken Donuts French cruller. Or however it’s spelled.

Home-made, and shaken in a plastic bag with a bunch of icing sugar when they’re fresh out of the hot oil. Mmmmmmm.
