The top marginal tax rate in 1955 was 91%. Do you still want to go back ?
according to yahoo news headlines the kid is rehomed for now …
Yah about that. I was laid off from a good paying job and went 6 years working multiple part time jobs to pay the bills. I drove limos, assembled parts in factories, unloaded aircraft, drove a forklift, worked in deli’s, remodeled houses, worked on cars, hauled furniture, cut trees, and landscaped. At one point I was traveling an hour one way to work a part time job. I would sleep in a storage room to cut down on driving. I did this in my 50’s.
No government subsidies. And yes, I qualified for them. What I did get from the government were my hours cut by a company to avoid paying for my health insurance which coincided nicely with an increase in the cost of my personal insurance policy I was hoping to cancel. All this due to… wait for it… the Affordable Health Care Act.
the claim was made that TV style families didn’t exist. That you can’t seem to grock it was a common social norm to have parents like that then that’s on you.
Grok.
Oh for fuck’s sake. If by “TV style family” you mean a family of white people where the Father was the sole breadwinner and had enough of an income that he could support a stay at home mom, then yes obviously such families existed, nor have i ever said otherwise. In fact I came from such a family. And obviously some of those families were happy. But again, so what? The implication seems to be that there was no vice or misery until the hippies invented those things in the 60s. This is absurd, even only considering “TV style families.” You only have to read contemporary fiction to see how absurd this is. For every Ward Cleaver there is a Harry Angstrom.
I thought “rehomed” was a term used for pets.
A Goldsboro, NC couple decided they wanted some of the glory, too.
As to the thread hijack: There never was, is or will be a “golden age”. There were crappy and good parents then (no matter your “then”) and there are crappy and good parents now.
It might be. Or at least a frequent event. If the parents are addicts they’re getting high daily if at all possible, kid probably sees it all the time.
I think the main objection is effectively you’re making the claim that this wonderful utopia existed in the past only. Indeed, I believe you said something like “they’re mostly gone now and we’re left with your version of reality”. This seems disingenuous. There are plenty of stable, loving families. My kids have this environment in 2016. I had it in the 1980s. My parents had it in the 1950s. Well, that last one isn’t actually completely true. There was some heavy drinking and a string of divorces. But for the most part I think it was okay.
I think a big difference is now a lot of the imperfections and nastiness is out in the open. It always existed. You just didn’t talk about it as much.
My idyllic childhood is interesting, because it really was a great, middle class upbringing. I had everything we needed and more, a loving environment, a great public school education with dedicated teachers, and the ability to play in the neighborhood. Yet its important not to look at this era with rose colored glassed: I grew up as a white kid in apartheid South Africa. This really was on the backs of many, with the economy and government set up to essentially serve 10% of the population.
The United States is not quite as extreme as that, but this discrepancy does exist, and its naive to think that things were much better in the past then they are now. Ironically, its easier to think that largely because in many ways things are better now, in particular when it comes to not hiding the imperfections.
Man, I thought when I saw this thread that it would be people horrified, like me, that they published this picture, especially with the kid’s face unblurred. That’s just sensationalist and harmful to a little kid.
Yes, what is mostly gone is the 2 parent single income family where one of the parents stayed home to raise the children and maintain the household.
…and freedom.
Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.
That’s perfect. The thread now has it’s own anthem for heroin overdoses by someone who died from it, Janis Joplin.
At 27
Just wondering how many black servants all your perfect “back when America was great and white” families had? Or if they were just invisible people on the other side of town. Might as well say what you mean rather than speak in code.
Not to mention, 97.374% of heroin addicts are white people who probably had perfect white 1950s unbringings at some point in the previous generations. How did that work out.
Freedom isn’t free
No, there’s a hefty fukin’ fee.
And if you don’t throw in your buck 'o five
Who will?
What a massive litany of racist bullshit. You think the generation of parents that came from the Depression had servant? There’s obviously a code rattling around in your head.
Again, a racist rant on your part.
