Doper Diplomacy - Fall and Winter 2002

Winter 1907 results are up in Dip 1040.

Looks like my Diplomacy theory: “Dip is a circle” has been born out in 1040. Imagine that.

A few thoughts about the WorldMasters tourney:

  1. We probably ought to start a separate thread for discussing it. Since this one’s already on page 13, we ought to let this thread die out when Dip 1040 and Dip 1046 do, to save wear and tear on the hamsters.

  2. Anyone asked Dewey Cheatem Undhow (sp?) if he’d like to be an alternate? He was a pretty strong player in Dip 934. Also, if Steve Enzor was interested in throwing his lot in with us, he’s done a good job of resurrecting Russia after Maeglin left it in disarray, and would be a decent alternate.

  3. On the assignment of countries:
    a) Dave, where are we? Have the players all given country preferences to you yet?
    b) Since we’re all on the same side, and playing in different games, rather than all playing in one game against each other, I think whatever process we use to decide on countries should be (i) out in the open, and (ii) accompanied by a reasonable amount of discussion to make sure we get a good fit between players and countries.

I personally suggest we use my spreadsheet to come up with its maximized matchings, preferencewise, between players and countries, but then open the floor up for discussion to make sure it’s given everyone a country they wouldn’t mind playing in tough competition, and switch things around as much as necessary so that everyone’s happy.

Any thoughts? Or should we save further discussion for a new thread?

I agree strongly with everything RT’s just said about country assignments for the WM02 Tourney, and I’ve started a thread here to talk about it.

The four survivors in Dip 1040 - Austria (Abe Babe, England (Weirddave), France (Omniscient), and Russia (Steve) - have voted to declare a 4-way draw.

Congrats to all of you - you played well!!

I don’t think I ever wanted to attack and wipe out a country so badly as I did to Russia, with both players. Grrrrr…

Sheesh, always a day late and dollar short, I am.

I don’t suppose it was coincidental…if only England were joining you. Bwhahaha!

So, 1040’s all over. A slightly disappointing result since it was nicely balanced with lots still to play for. I expected it still to be running when I got back from holiday (3 weeks in California & New Mexico, flying out Sunday:D) However, I think the fact that Russia was supporting England against France would have resulted in an Austrian win. France and Russia had to work together to defeat Austria, by fighting instead they gave Austria the edge. Anyway, it was a good show while it lasted.

I still think Abe could have held on for a win, but that’s just my opinion.

Good luck in the tournament, chaps.

That’s gratitude for you. Kids these days, sheesh!

Go Alien, Dip 1046 is still going strong. I’ll email you the lastest on it if you send me an e-mail address. Your analysis is usually as much fun as the game.

Not being privy to any of the actual Dipping, I have to go by what’s in the moves. But it looked like France and Russia remained allied against Austria at the same time as they were taking different sides with respect to England - a perfectly sensible arrangement, actually.

As a result, I think a draw made sense - you had three power blocs, not quite equal, but close enough: Austria (14 units), France (10), Russia/England (10). A French fleet move to the Adriatic in Spring 1908 (I was surprised it didn’t happen in Fall 1907) would have forced Austria to protect Venice and Trieste, pulling units away from its front lines, and further evening the game.

As long as the Russia/England bloc was willing to side against the stronger of France and Austria in the coming years, neither Austria nor France could win. And playing the balance-of-power role to be part of a draw was the best bet for Russia and England to avoid a loss.

Omni, you can’t be too mad at Steve - his play, and his willingness to be your ally where you otherwise had none, saved you from an Austrian win. He may have helped prevent your conquest of England, but that was more or less stalled out anyway.

What I don’t understand is why, sometime during the past few years, you didn’t try to negotiate a deal with England, where you and Russia would agree to let him live, and he’d agree not to expand, so you and Russia could focus on Austria, and he’d be included in any DIAS. Especially once Italy’s fleets died, the Med was yours if you wanted it. Three or four fleets there instead of two, and you’d have had the Adriatic and the Aegean open to you, opening a whole 'nother front.

I had been trying most of the game to get Russia to help me go after France. I would get at least non-interference allowing me to take Munich, and support Russia in taking and keeping Kiel. He would have none of it. He wanted all of his country back, including Sevastapol. He also wouldn’t bite on my suggestion that he go after England, as he could get most of the big pieces and leave France out in the cold.

With my third fleet steaming westward, I could have stabilized the line, and probably retaken the Ionian before France got there fro mBrest, so I wasn’t advancing there.

I think I could have retaken Moscow and Warsaw, but saw no good chance for advancement in Germany or the Mediterranean.

Well played to all, even those who left our ranks early due to being crunched by surrounding countries.

Congratulations are due to all four of the survivors, especially Abe Babe for showing how deadly Austria can be if it doesn’t get crunched right away; Omniscient, for bulking France up just in time to block Austria in Germany and in the Med; Steve, for taking Russia from being a power-in-exile to holding the balance of power; and Weirddave, for sticking with it in a lousy situation. (Same thing goes for Shibb, even though he didn’t last to the end.)

I’ll have some comments on specific tactical situations later, if I pull my act together.

For your viewing pleasure, I have finally put together a page for 1046, you can find it here. I based it on JC’s model, but made a few changes of my own. Comments and criticisms are welcome from the peanut gallery.

My only comment is, if the most recent move completed was Winter 1906, then how come France has 4 units when he only controls one base? And so forth around the map.

Because all builds aren’t in yet, silly. The map is so people can plan their builds, it will be updated when builds are in.

Additionally, there is new Press from Turkey on the Dip 1046 homepage.

OK, so the link labeled “Winter 1906” gives you the map of Europe before the Winter 1906 adjustments. Now that I know that, it makes sense.

I like the animated map. It was kinda fun watching a Russian army get all the way to Brest via the overland route.

I also really like the animations.

I think, though, that the Italy flag should be on the top.

And a little bigger than everyone else’s.
