New Diplomacy game - who wants to play?

It’s been awhile since the last round of SDMB Diplomacy games concluded, so the sentiment arose among a few of our veteran Dippers that it was high time for a new game.

After some email discussion, it transpired that Jonathan Chance, who has GMed SDMB Dip games in the past, wants to step down from his pedestal and actually play, for once.

I’ve agreed to GM in his stead. (Be very afraid. :D)

We have two players in addition to Jonathan who were part of the email discussion leading to this game: the estimable Abe Babe, and 2002 Rookie of the Year White Lightning.

That gives us three players; we need four more. We’ll get started after Labor Day (next week, that is).

As always, we’ll have a kibitzing thread here in MPSIMS so that players and spectators alike can comment, commisserate, insult, and so forth.

If you’d like to play, email me at the address in my profile, and include your country preferences from most to least preferred, by country initials.

For example, GRATIFE = Germany (first choice), Russia (2nd), Austria (3rd),…,England (last).

I’ll assign countries based on your preferences once we have a full complement of players.

So line up, sign up, and re-enlist today. Send me those emails, campers!

I’ve been jonesing for a Dip game all summer.

I look forward to another battle for (dis)honor. My email is on its way.

And RT, I’ve seen pictures of both you and JC. His stead would never fit you.

I have a friend who wants to get in, but he can’t start until after September. I hope that my plate will be (relatively) clean by then, so I’ll volunteer as “country most likely to be dominated”. Maybe I’ll even take Austria to make it more likely I’ll get squashed…

Shibb - is your friend not available until “after September”, or “after the beginning of September”? I’m hoping to at least start the pre-Spring 1901 Diplomacy period next week.

If you really want to play Austria, just list it as your first choice; chances are you’ll be the only one to do so. In which case it’ll be yours. (Funny thing was, if I’d been playing, I was going to specifically request Austria. I hadn’t played Austria in 30 years, and I figured it was about time. :))

And if you really want to be dominated, go here.

Oh, RT, that was mean

I think I heard my name up there.

Yes, folks, all you people who put up with me ranting and raving in those monster threads a while back will now have the chance to lay the smack down on me. Now who’s in?

Hi, if it is too much trouble, or really impossible to describe, then please ignore me.

but what is the diplomacy game?

eVo

Dear Esteemed RT, Abe Babe, White Lightning, & JC,

As much as I’d love to join you in another game of Dip, I regret to inform you that I must remain in exile. I know you will miss my contribution to the game, but do try to console yourselves. I will try as best I can to watch the game from afar, and perhaps someday we shall meet on the gamefield again.

Au Revoir,

Queen of England

P.S. evolutionbaby, if you’ve got the time, go for it. Dip’s a lot of fun, and these fellas give really good instructions on this game.

Hmmmmmm…

thinks

Well, yeah.

Dave: Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, Do It, Do It, DO IT, DO IT!!!
RT: Money, baby! Email sent. Thanks, by the way, for stepping up to run this one.

JC: Are you gonna get us a CAT23 number for this game? I kinda like having that official feeling. Plus I need to have something to call the folder in my inbox to put everything in.

Ding. I’m in.

Sorry, think of that as “muttering” to myself. I’d sent a note to JC a while ago asking if he had two spaces in a game. I’d told him about playing this way and he said he’d love to give a try. But he has an unnatural spate of travel to Latin America lined up and didn’t want to get involved if he can’t do it justice.

As for me, I just sent an official player request. Hope there’s still space available and look forwarded getting spanked by the pros, Hastur’s thread notwithstanding.

I don’t want to know what you two are doing between turns. (insert winkie here)

Guys, I’ve been checking this thread about every 10 minutes all day to see who else is signing up. I just sit here, watching Monday Night Football or whatever, clicking refresh during the commercials.
I love this game.

I want to play. I’ve slipped from the boards a bit recently, and as a result I always missed the starts of Dip games. An email is forth coming.

I’d like to observe a game, if that’s possible. I’ve never played Dip before, but it sounds like something I’d be interested in. What say you?

Is there a site with the rules that you’re playing by?
How’s it work?
Where can I watch it?

The rules can be seen here:

www.diplom.org

Click on the ‘online resources’ link and you’ll find a downloadable PDF of the rules. Knock yourself out.

As for those who wish to ‘observe’ I’d say write to RTFirefly and ask to be included on the contact list.

OK, we have a quorum: Jonathan Chance, Abe Babe, White Lightning, ShibbOleth, Weirddave, Maeglin, and Omniscient.

Most of you have sent me your country preferences; one player has said he doesn’t have any preferences, which is fine too. But if you do have preferences, and haven’t sent them to me, please do so. I’ll feed 'em into the computer at home tonight, and let you know who’s got what countries once I do that.

Move deadlines:

  1. Time of day: Moves will be due at 3am, Eastern time, on the day of the deadline. (Why, you ask? Because I’ve been known to get up early. If everyone’s moves are in on time, I can usually get things adjudicated before the East Coast players are awake.) This means that, effectively, the moves are due the night before. At midnight, for you West Coast types.

  2. 1901: With the Labor Day weekend coming up, some people (including your GM) might be out of town, so I’m thinking that the Spring 1901 move shouldn’t be until late next week. How does Thursday, September 5 sound?

My experience as a player is that the Fall 1901 Dip period is pretty complex, too: only after the Spring move do you finally have the first inkling of who your allies and enemies really are. So I’m going to give less than a week for that move, but still longish. If Th 9/5 is OK for S01, then I’m thinking W 9/11 for F01, and Th 9/12 for W01 builds/disbands. (Does anyone have any problems with having a move deadline on 9/11? I don’t, but I’m willing to respect others’ feelings on this.)

  1. 1902 and after: I’ll go with roughly a 3-moves-every-2-weeks pace until y’all tell me to speed it up.

  2. Deadline extensions: we all have lives, jobs, and stuff like that; sometimes Dip has to take a backseat. Extensions will be granted liberally. But let me know early, when you can.

  3. NMRs: don’t do this to your fellow players. People who fail to send in moves by the deadline, without requesting an extension, will be replaced if at all possible. And their chances of playing in future SD Dip games will be minuscule.

Anyhow, that’s the official BS for now. I’ll be talking with Jonathan Chance about how to post move results and maps, and I’ll let you know when we’ve got an active website.

Everything sounds good so far. RT, I would appreciate it if you could use the email addy in my profile rather than the one with which I emailed you my interest in the game.

Thanks!

MR
