I’m posting this on behalf of my mom. She’s been getting a bit pudgy just of late and doing a lot of exercise both to lose weight and maintain bone density. She’s had a few small varicose veins for several years now, but they seem to have gotten worse, and she’s developed a couple of new ones.
She basically does weight stuff, with light ankle weights in a lying down position to work her legs.
I’ve never heard of anything like this. In the courses I took for massage therapy, I never read or was taught anything about exercise making varicose veins worse. Standing for extended periods of time, yeah, that’ll make 'em worse, but exercise? I thought that since muscle activity was a major factor in venous circulation, excercise would be helpful since the muscles being worked would help push the blood back to the heart.
Any of you medical types know what’s going on here and what mom can do to stop the varicose veins from getting any worse? Qadgop? Dr.J?
