That is so very cool. Amazing job.
One question: when I finally get to go back to my real home (Columbus, Ohio), can you make the switch? I guess I should worry about that when I move, but since I’m here and all…
Again, that’s a really great thing you’ve done, obs. Spanking good idea, Demo.
As someone who studied demographics as part of his advertising degree (No plans on utilizing it, however), I think someone should be sending you a gift sometime soon.
Cecil?
Although at this point the sample size is still small, I have a feeling that will change.
Ok, I’m back.
Minneapolis was fun, and the weather was better than expected. If it weren’t for the cancelled return flight all would have been great. I wonder if they will reimburse me for making my sick wife pick me up from the airport at 1am.
But hey, they gave me a $5 coupon for dinner; of course, they were going to give me a free dinner on the plane, but so what.
Anyway. The USA map has been updated through Laramie, Wyoming (Moebius). The World map will wait until tomorrow. I’m probably going to redo the world map on a simpler image so that compression can reduce the image better.
Tripler has been moved to North Freaking Dakota; Falcon’s home town is spelled correctly (though Colubmia is more original, if you ask me) and Green Bean has been moved from Winfield, New Jersey, to Westfield, New Jersey, a distance of 4.3 miles, according to Mapquest.
Further, I would like to say: All of you states that have more than one town of the same name (there are actually three Middletowns in Ohio), I hate you.
Screeme: Are you born and raised Vancouver? That is where I grew up. In our honor, even if some Portlander shows up, that smilie will always be “Vancouver Area”. If you are a local, which high school did you go to?
CnoteChris: Gifts? I don’t need no stinkin’ gifts. It is enough to know that for once I am not raining on a parade. That, and I’ve probably cemented my invitation to the next Santa Rosa BBQ/Boat Show.
Quick update:
The reason for the delay since last Thursday update has been that I screwed up the world map beyond all recognition (or in military speak I SUTWMBAR). I’ve been trying to recover from my error but have decided it is time to simply redo it. This isn’t a huge issue, I still have the original, unsmilied map, and with the code already written it is just a matter of putting new smileys in exactly the right place, tedious but simple.
However, what I would like to do is to present a world map that is not much more than 100k in size The problem with the currnet map is that it simply has too many colors and color segments to efficiently compress (.gif is larger than .jpg by about a factor of 3). I have tried to find, but have so far failed, a larg line map or solid color map of the world.
As an idicator of size, I would like to be able to put at least 6 smilies in England. If anybody could point me to one I would be most grateful.
The maps are reasonably current again.
- The world map is current through dylan_73.
- The USA map is current through hesredbird.
- LittleTassie has been removed from the world map.
I encourage everybody to at least look at the world map again. I have added a couple of features, that I may add to the USA map as well (a lot of coding is involved).
First, when you mouseover a smiley, the text box will appear right away, but you’ll notice that it doesn’t disappear immediately when you leave the smiley. The box will disappear after 3 seconds.
The reason for this delay is to allow an oppportunity to click on links in the box. If you click on the name, it will take you to that persons profile here at SDMB. If there is a camera icon after their name, clicking on it will take you to their picture at the People Pages.
I encourage you to at least confirm that the links for your name are set correctly, and if you have a moment ask that you check a few of the names around you. Also, I have not tested it on browsers other than IE, so I may have brokent the code for other browsers at some point and be unaware.
I will likely make the same changes for the USA pages, but don’t have a timeline as of yet.
Any other comments or suggestions are, as always, welcome and encouraged.
