Doper parents: What's your favorite brand of diapers?

Bare in mind that my information is about 14 years old but this is how I remembered which diapers to buy when my wife would send me to the store: We love Luvs. Huggies hug (which was a bad thing, I guess). Pampers were OK if they were out of Luvs.

Mazel tov!

The Bug has been in Pampers since the beginning, and they’re very reliable for her. She’s worn Huggies a couple of times here and there when her day care ran low and had to borrow. They seemed fine for her, although they’re unquestionably a different shape/fit. One thing that I’m a sucker for which hasn’t been mentioned – Pampers have Sesame Street characters on them! Is it worth the price difference? If you heard my daughter point out “Ehmo” and “Buht” every morning, you’d think so.

I agree with this – when the kid is very little, he’ll appreciate not being attacked by an ice-cold wipe in the middle of the night. And even once he’s grown up some, the ability to add more water is key. A word of warning – make sure you do add the water as directed when you put in new wipes. Otherwise they dry very quickly and can be a fire hazard.

Oh, that’s not what I was talking about, though that IS a concern.

I meant: When you put the diaper back on, make sure his penis is pointing down in the diaper, rather than up, because otherwise, the pee will shoot up his belly, dribble around the top edge of the diaper and you will be changing his clothing and sheets constantly. There’s not much absorbant material at the top edge of the diaper.

Also remember that the butt crack is nothing but a poo conduit that leads directly to the top of the diaper.

We really liked Pampers Swaddlers when he was first born - but he outgrew those within a month or so. (He wasn’t huge, but he was very long-torsoed, so he outgrew diapers quickly).

We moved to Huggies after that because he had the same problem with both Pampers Baby Dry and Pampers Cruisers that I had as a baby - he’s allergic to Pampers. No idea why, but every time he has worn Pampers, he’s broken out in a rash. We’ve even tried generic diapers since I’m all about saving money, and while he does okay in most of them, after about a week, he’ll start breaking out in a rash. The only generics that have NOT caused a rash are CVS-brand, so we’ve been alternating those and Huggies, depending on what’s on sale at CVS (if we can buy Huggies and get the extra bucks back for them, we do that).

We did cloth diaper for about a year, but he still had to wear disposables at daycare (they couldn’t do cloth diapers because of state regulations), and the cloth were my favorites. Since my mom will be keeping our next baby, we will be doing all cloth once the meconium phase has passed (no sense in ruining a CD when we can spare the costs for one pack of Swaddlers :)). Prefolds and covers seem to be cost-effective and work well - and we’re figuring any kid is going to have the rash issue. Plus, they have a really nice resell value.

Trial and error. Total trial and error.

Not to hijack, but word. When you go baby-things shopping, don’t worry about getting anything smaller than, say 3-6 months. You’ll be inundated with cute stuff for newborns, but the baby will outgrow that stuff in a matter of weeks and you’ll be stuck with a baby with nothing to wear.

Pampers didn’t work well on 2 of my kids, because they had really small butts. The middle one was a little chubbier, and Pampers fit better on him.

Huggies have never failed, for any of my 3. Better yet, those Kirkland ones from Costco are just as good, but they don’t come in size 1.

I had terrible luck with Luvs, and those Parent’s Choice from Walmart. By far, though, White Cloud were the worst ever. Might as well use a Kleenex – they just dissolved at the first hint of wetness. The CVS brand is adequate, in a pinch. The Target brand (if they still have it) was actually not bad.

And I just realized, I’ve been diapering kids for almost 8 years now. That’s kind of pathetic, and amazing at the same time.

Good Lord, Lady!! He’s not supposed to stay in them for a week!!

(jk)
Thanks all, for the advice and discussion in general, and keep it rolling!
From the little bit I’ve seen in parenting forums, I’d much rather ask here… over there, you seem to get some intelligent parents, but more who aren’t.

On a mostly unrelated note, we have a Safety 1st stroller/carseat combo, that was lent to us by friends, and I’m just wondering; is the car seat supposed to clip into the stroller, or just lay on top? (which wouldn’t seem too secure, to me)

And the shape of babies’ butts are THAT significantly different? The same diaper could be used on a baboon or chimp. C’mon.

I don’t know that particular carseat/stroller, but every other one I’ve ever seen clips or snaps into the stroller. It would be terribly unsafe for it just to rest on top! So there’s got to be a way to attach them securely.

Can I use that as a sig?

Not the shape, no, but the proportions. PiperCub is long and lean compared to other babies his age, who tend to be shorter and chubbier, with bigger belly-bum-thighs circumferences.

It doesn’t take much for leakage, so slight differences in fit can be significant.

You make it sound like the house isn’t already filled with various video game systems.

Our Gracco has two straps to fasten the baby bucket into the stroller, in addition to the latch mechanism. The latch by itself holds it in for most things, but it would still be possible for it to tip forward without the straps on the sides.

Our Graco most definitely snaps the car seat to the snack tray, and then there are red latches part way up the handle to clip the rest of the seat in. It’s very secure.
The Duos and Duo Tours don’t seem to have the extra clips, but the seats still seem secure.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Our first child was tall and skinny, while our second was shorter and extremely chubby. The two couldn’t have been any different & we never had a problem with any of 3 different brands. The very few times we had a diaper leak it was attributable to user error.

Knock yourself out.

Here’s a bonus fortune cookie for you: Beware of diaperless, sneezing infants.

My mom (a nurse, unafraid of bodily fluids) disappeared and came back with carpet cleaner and a tape measure…six feet before the poo hit the wall.

Sadly, the answer is “yes”. Babies vary in shape & proportions significantly, and this means that some brands of diapers will leak and others, differently shaped, will not.

Trust me on this - I have experimental evidence.

Newborn babies are definitely capable of projectile-poo streams. Amazingly traumatic for parents the first time it happens (though it caught my mom-in-law right in the face, which was a bit of an upside … ).

Target diapers are great. We bought them in the giant box and they did a fabulous job. Never leaked–if they did, we knew it was time to go up a size. For overnight though, we used Huggies Overnights, which we found to be better than the store brand. But you only use a couple a night, and when they’re older, one a night, so the extra cost isn’t that bad.

They’re also capable of geyser vomiting, as I’ve been a first-hand witness too.
Imagine a baby laying on his back, drinking his bottle, when AOAS, you witness Young Faithful erupting, to the tune of about 2 feet vertical. Please don’t ask how I know this, as I’m remembering way more about it than I’d like to at the moment… :stuck_out_tongue:
