Mostly yes.

I was only friends with one or two prior to asking them out. Was more along the lines of seeing someone in some random place, liking the way they looked (yes, I was shallow that way), and saying “would you like to go grab a drink sometime?”

Several. It got easier when I realized I had a natural advantage. If I was being stared at, it was a pretty good bet they were already interested.

Yes, I asked a man out quite recently - my boss, in fact.
Did he accept?
No. I got stunned silence until I asked ‘what gives’ a few days later. He said that although he found me attractive and enjoyed my company very much, the fact that he was my boss meant it was not to be.
I thought (and still think) it was weasel code for “I don’t return your feelings”. 
Shame, becuase I thought I was in with a shout, too.
Are you friends?
Yes. Although I confess that there is a bit of me that resents how he handled things. It is better to be honest so as to avoid false hope in these things, I find.
