Dopers b1981: Get in here and discuss your pop-culture memories from childhood

Disney movie nights
Flight of the Navigator
And one I think called Leftovers?
All I remember is a magnetic hat and much singing of Clementine.

Little Nintendo watches.
Classroom punishment was boy/girl seating at lunch.
Rectangular pizzas at school.

The Getalong Gang? With the Moose and Crocodile and Poodle? And didn’t they live in a parked train? And didn’t they wear their names on their shirts?

I just very vaguely remember them. I watched them if they were on but they were never a favorite of mine.

Oh yeah I liked those too, also Newton’s Apple and Mr.Wizard.

 The ones I’m thinking of were just molded phosphorescent plastic (vinyl?) with faces and clothes and stuff painted on. And I also had a rabbit and duck with wheels set in off center so when you rolled them they wobbled. They glowed in the dark too, and had a raised dealie on the back where you could sort of snap on a glo friend.

I wanted one of those but my parents wouldn’t get one for me. Later they got one real cheap second hand but the light didn’t work and they never bothered to fix it. :frowning:

I bet you’re thinking of GlowWorm. His face lit up when you hugged him. ::Acts all tough:: Yea, I had one.

1982 here, but I remember most of the things listed as well. Did anyone else have a Teddy Ruxpin? It was a talking bear that came with stories on cassette. It came with a book so you could read along with the tape. I too, loved TMNT, and had most of the action figures and remeber watching the first movie several times in a row. What about the pillow person? It was a pillow with a face and sewn on arms and legs. I also had this doll that had zippers and laces and buttons to practice on.

Some other toys I had at a very young age were a My Buddy, a glow worm, and one of those ride in cars with a red body and yellow top. Later there was nintendo with Super mario 3 and Duckhunt, Double Dragon, and the Ninja Turtles game. The original blue and yellow super soaker gun with the pump and, the Super NES with Super Mario World, Mystical Ninja and Street fighter 2. No idea on the year that I got a lot of these. I probably got a glow worm around 1985/6 and the My Buddy in 87 or 88. I definitely got the super nintendo in 92 and the nintendo around 88/89.

That’s it! Thank you! I couldn’t think of that for the life of me. And yes, they did live in a parked train.

All right, now who had “My Little Ponies”?

To be specific, it was the end section, a cabose, a word that I have always found to be hilarious.

We had a Teddy Ruxpin as well. Well, my brother did. (I’m 1980, he’s 83). Shortly after the arrival of the Ruxpin doll, I decided it would be a really good idea to shave the doll bald.

BAD, BAD idea.

'82 baby checking in. A few memories:

  • I got a WalkMan and an MC Hammer tape for my tenth birthday. I listened to that tape almost continuously until it finally wore out a couple of months later. Never did get a replacement.

  • Teddy Ruxpin TERRIFIED me. Talking toys in general creep me out, and to see one with an actual moving mouth…shudder I couldn’t even stand to watch the TV commercial, let alone be in the presence of the toy itself.

  • My little brother (b. 1983) and I would frequently pool our toys together and come up with adventures featuring all of them. The Turtles, He-Man, and the Autobots teaming up against the Decepticons and G.I. Joe to rescue My Little Pony…great fun.

I’m an 81er. I remember getting a Gobot for Christmas and being pretty bummed. GoBots were so lame. No self respecting giant robot from outerspace would be lead by a moped or what ever the hell that thing was. How could anyone confuse them with the real deal, transformers.

I remember discovering that the Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Sherwood forest playset was the exact same toy as the Ewok Village.

I still know where all the warp zones and warp wistles are in the Mario games. I’m convinced this knowledge will some day pay off.

I can’t believe it took someone so long to mention “My Little Ponies!” I had so many of these things. This thread brings back lots of memories! Smurfs, Gobots, Duck Tales… does anybody remember Bozo the Clown? Was that just a Tampa thing? Also, Reading Rainbow, Mr Rogers, Sesame Street, Mr. Wizard, You Can’t Do That on Television, etc etc… I remember Bill Cosby had a show with a little red pen he called Mortimer. That had the coolest theme song… Picture Pages - That was it!

I had a Cabbage Patch Kid named Olivette Dori - what the hell kind of name is that anyway? It’s sad 'cos on ebay, Cabbage Patch Kids are now called “vintage.” Vintage!

I loved Popples. Rainbrow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake…
My brothers were into GI Joe, Micro Machines, Transformers, Go-Bots, and Legos (vintage legos… God I feel old). My favorite GI Joe man was Dusty. Back in the day, I used to suck my thumb and carry around something silky… geez, why am I talking about this? <—look, I still say “geez!” Anyway, Dusty had this little silky thing attached to his helmet, and I used to walk around carrying him around with that little silky thing between my fingers. (sigh) Now Dusty is going for up to $12.99 on ebay. Are we *that *old?

What about Max Headroom? That thing was so annoying.

I had several pairs of Jordache jeans. A Members Only jacket. Jelly shoes. Hypercolor. Z Cavaricci. Keds.

Garbage Pail Kids! My parents hated these things! My brothers and I used to secretly get ahold of them (somehow). I remember once my parents caught us with them and took them away from us.

Anyone remember Puffalumps?

What kind of commercials can anyone remember from that time? Besides the Micro Machines man, that is.

Oh yeah, I was born March 1981.

The number one coolest thing about this show (I remember it being a short segment) was the noise the pen made…Some early, beeping synth sound. There was a play-at-home workook that we never had but that pen was sooo cool.

And I remember the theme some too. Very catchy.
Something like…
“Picture Pages, Picture Pages,
Hurry up, its Picture Pages,
Go and get your crayons and your pen-cillss
Picture Pages, Picture pages,
[something, something]
Till Bill Cosby does another Picture Page with YOU!”

Actually, I took a minute to look for the Picture Pages theme and I found it! Considering I haven’t heard that sound for, what, 20 years and as a child then, I’m suprised at my accuracy. That really takes me back.

She has some other cool 80’s commercials on her site, too:

Wow, this thread is bringing up so many memories! (1979 baby here)

My Little Ponies? Check, got my first one for Christmas in 1982. It was a gray one with pink hair and hearts on the butt. This was before all the schmancy ponies like roller skating ones and curly-haired ones came out that my sister (1982 baby) got.
Thundercats? Check
PBS shows: does anyone else remember a show called Vegetable Soup?
I really wasn’t allowed to watch reguar TV (other than Saturday morning cartoons, and the occasional Scooby Doo episode), but I did watch a lot of PBS- Sesame Street, Mr Rogers, Reading Rainbow, Square One, 321 Contact.
My guy friends played with He-Man (by the power of Grayskull!), GI Joe, Transformers and Star Wars action figures. We figured out a way to get the My Little Ponies involved in the action.

Oh, who else remembers Knight Rider?

Bill Cosby’s picture pages theme song? I even remember all the words to that!
I was a little old for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles but kids I babysat liked them.

Jelly shoes, Garbage Pail Kids, Ghost Busters, playing Chinese Jump Rope, Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” from the movie Cocktail. Bought a Jem doll with my own money, and my first (and only) record I ever bought was Tiffany.

6th grade (I skipped a grade, so this was 1989-90, I was 10) for me was all about LA Gear Shoes, the Simpsons, shoes with the basketball pump thingy in the tongue, multiple pairs of socks over leggings, Milli Vanilli (Girl, you know it’s true!).

Man, I could go on.

I can’t believe that none of you have mentioned Swatch watches…duhhhh

Oh my goodness, I can’t believe it took me this long to remember

THE A-TEAM!!

I had a Play-Doh Ghostbusters set around 1987 or '88. It came with glow-in-the-dark dough, a device for making ghosts, and a car that was also a mold for making the ghostbuster characters.

Oh yeah, same here. :smack: Well at least we know we have the same lapses in memory.

Yooooo, the time - 6 o’clock on the Swatch Watch
Got a date - Can’t be late!
The girl’s gonna do me
move me
to the jacuzzi

January 1980 here.

I don’t remember liking much TV back then. Being the youngest, I never got to pick what we watched.
My oldest sister (Jan. 1977) liked Jem, She-Ra
My middle sister (Sept. 1978) liked GI Joe, He-Man, the A-Team
They both liked Smurfs, Fraggle Rock, and other lame shows.

I remember wishing that Gargamel would kill all the smurfs.

I liked Looney Toons (Gossamer is my favorite, cause monsters are such eeenteresting people!). I also liked Mr. Rogers and Reading Rainbow. I spent most of my time reading - my favorite books were by Stephan King or the Little House books, or looking at an empty dollhouse and making up stories in my head (I didn’t play with dolls). However, I did have a Cabbage Patch Kid that looked like me. I also had a Real Baby. I preferred stuffed animals. I listened to Oldies and Heavy Metal (yes, even when I was little). My favorite bands were AC/DC, Aerosmith, Metallica, GNR, the Beatles and the Everly Brothers. I watched a lot of LA Law (my mother’s favorite). My first celebrity crush was Jimmy Smitts - actually he’s still one of the sexiest actors I’ve ever seen. I hated NKOTB, Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, etc. I don’t remember the Challenger. I used to stay up late to watch Up All Night - for some reason my mother let me. My sister was strangly attracted to Gilbert Gottfried. Actually, I miss Up All Night. I saw some of the best bad movies that way - like Reform School Girls. They were always trashy movies. My favorite movies were The Lost Boys and Mary Poppins.

We had Atari and Coleco (sp?) and my mother was the best at them. We never did get NES. I wasn’t a big fan of electronic games until we got our first computer - a Tandy. My favorite games were Duke Nukem and Commander Keen and text games like Diamond Mine. My favorite past time was spending Saturdays going to yard sales and the flea market with my mom. My sisters never came, we got a lot of exercise (we didn’t have a car). And, we always had lunch at the buffet at York Steakhouse.

I remember shirts and dresses with a row of hooks for little plastic charms. I loved jellies and my clogs. I hated Jordache but I loved Levis. I thought people who wore pony tails on the side of their heads were stupid but I did wear 3 or 4 headbands at one time. I had a swatch but I never wore more than one at a time. I got my first pair of combat boots when I was 11. When I got older, I loved White Zombie and hated Nirvana. I also loved Country music.

I never did wear more than one color sock at a time. I was jealous of my sister though because she had perfected the art form of folding over her pant cuffs and folding them up.

On preview, I realize why I didn’t have many friends. I seem to have had the dual personalities of a child and a 20 year old. I didn’t like people my own age but ever since I can remember, I got along great with adults.

1981 here, though I have to warn you, commercial pop culture went right over my head.

There was TNMT, of course. Way to make yourself very unpopular: confidently assert to the other 8-year-olds that Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo were painters, not reptiles.

I remember hearing “Kokomo” in my elementary school; I remember hearing about that scary “heavy metal” and those satanic “Red Hot Chili Peppers”; and Vanilla Ice and M.C. Hammer. Me, I listened to They Might Be Giants when I got into my teenage years.

TV shows: Garfield and Friends, Square One, ST:TNG (of course). Breathless with anticipation for Deep Space Nine and (later) Voyager to begin. Absolutely ecstatic when the movies came out.

Other movies included Wayne’s World (of course).

I remember BBSes, which I got into at a very young age.

World events: first hearing about the war in Rwanda, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Tiananmen Square and École Polytechnique massacres.

Was seriously into Magic: The Gathering as a teenager. (Contrary to popular reports, the loss of my virginity was not delayed – actually, it was hastened. Never mind.)
