Georgia. Moved to Atlanta metro in 2002 to go to Emory Law. Loved it and decided to stay.
'Cause it is. I mean y’all are NASCAR central in Charlotte!
Florida folks may wish to contribute (or argue) in the new thread Where in Florida does it stop being “Southern”, culturally? started by Revtim today.
Born and bred Georgian here.

Ditto. Some of “my people” came over with Oglethorpe, and some met the boat. Except for brief stints “up north” (Athens, Rome, and Atlanta!) I’ve lived in south Georgia my whole life, and have no plans for leaving.
Texas. Except Texas isn’t in the South

Questions to be answered:
- At what point will every state in the poll have at least ONE Doper?
- Which state will be the first to hit 20?
- Will this poll stay visible / active long enough for a state to get to 50?
East Texas is in the South. West Texas is in the West.
Now I know why you’re an LSU fan.
I’ve been in Missouri for the last year. Not sure yet if this is going to be a permanent home.
Currently living in the Atlanta, GA area. I’m a native of Chattanooga, TN, and have also lived in Knoxville, Murfreesboro and Nashville in TN, and Jackson, MS. (For non-southern places I’ve lived in Waterville, ME, Youngstown, OH and Tucson, AZ).
Do people in West Virginia not think of their state as part of The South? So far, nobody from WV has voted.
That and Other are the last holdouts.
This. And I’m not sure where you put Austin and the Metroplex.
If I’ve seen your posts before I should have asked you about Mosby. Any connection worth sharing? One of my favorite shows back in the 50’s and 60’s.
North East. Or somewhere close to wannabe San Francisco
Nah, just a reference to my old (now deceased) dog. Weimaraner ownership is kinda cult-like.
As to Mosby, I certainly lack the qualifications to say, but who was the better cavalry commander: him or Forrest?
WV is culturally and historically not The South, as far as I know. I haven’t lived there, but I’ve been many times. Not The South at all. It’s “Appalachian,” a whole different species of American.
Louisiana, transplanted for 17 years from, um, the USA or thereabouts. I bought a house and I am never moving again, dammit.
There’s a difference between the cultural South and the geographical South. I would call most of Maryland to be geographically Southern and culturally Northern. Baltimore? Ocean City? Silver Spring? Ain’t no way in hell they could be considered culturally Southern.
The area of Virginia near DC has likewise become culturally Northern due to an influx of people and economic change. Imho the quickest way to get to “The South” from NoVA is to take VA 28 south. Farm fields start whizzing by a few miles south of Manassas (of Bull Run fame). Or, take VA 7 northwest past Leesburg to Purcellville. Ostentatious gun store downtown, fundie college, head west out of town for high quality rednecks with pickup trucks and gas stations that sell 50 kinds of chewing tobacco. Yee haw!
