I gotten several jobs over the phone thru contract agencies. Never meet the agency guy and never meet the person I’d be reporting to. I’ve moved as much as 500 miles on these types of interviews alone.
On my present job I was called while on assignment in Tennessee from a guy in Detroit to represent an East Coast Company at a Japanese firm in southeast Michigan. I never saw a face until I showed up and started work. I still hadn’t meet anybody from the East Coast company yet, but they sent me $60K worth of computer hardware, software, cell phone and first class tickets to meet them in two weeks at the company office. I worked on contract for 6 months and they made me an offer. I’m still here 5 years later.
In 2000 I got a job copyediting computer books (For Dummies kind of stuff, but a different line). A friend of a friend, whom I’d never met, was working at the publisher based in Indiana–I lived in Pennsylvania–and I just emailed my résumé and he emailed me an editing test. I worked for them for about 6 months, and now I have some nice courtesy copies of books about Exchange Server and Access 2000.
