Sometimes I’ll post to a thread, including ongoing story threads, in such a way that there are few, if any, replies that follow. I’d like to know what it is I’m doing wrong: keying in boring text, going the wrong way with a story line, or adding something which is, without my knowing it, irritiating or insulting to others of the Teeming Millions who post to the thread.
If I make a mistake I want to know what it is, and will thus avoid it after that.
Thanx.
It took you 3477 posts to ask?
That should be a clue.
I thought about giving a detailed reply, but then realised: hey! this is dougie_monty!. And then I fell asleep.
I think you’re worrying too much, dougie_monty.
Hang on, that’s probably not constructive criticism. Umm … how about this: in the sheer volume of posts usually appearing on the board, one or two will fall by the wayside. It’s usually me there in the gutter, but, hey – if I see you around, I’ll say hi.
And poor dougie_monty’s thread vanishes without trace.
Unless someone bumps it :smack:
Nobody kills threads like I kill threads. I kill them dead for good.
I’d rate it a c-.
From what I’ve seen, “I am become a thread killer” is a widely shared phobia amongst many members of this board, and virtually always an unwarranted fear.
In my own case, I am sure that each of my posts engenders animated discussion at hundreds of dinner tables around the world. No doubt Cecil himself bookmarks each and every one, that he might review them at his leisure, and print out his favorites. Perhaps some day a prominent publisher will approach asking for permission to publish my posts in book form. I wonder how high it will get on the New York Times “Best Seller” list? I plan to use the royalties to buy an estate along the coast.
We all kill threads dougie. I seem to recall several that you’ve started that had very good response. As of this posting, your Surreal continuing story thread is on the first page of MPSIMS, and it’s 3 pages and over a month old.
If many people are like me (a situation which is frightening to consider), then creative writing comes in spurts. So, there may be absences from some story threads. But, not to worry, someone else usually comes in to fill the gap.
Some threads apparantly have a life of their own, even developing a personality. And, like people, not all personalities get along.
FWIW, I think the story threads are great fun. If I were to change anything (and I don’t see how you could), it would be to somehow limit the size of individual posts. A story in thread form seems to work best if there is a lot of leeway on which direction to go. Long, involved posts take away some of that freedom. Not to say that it’s always a bad idea, though. Sometimes a thourough enough explanation or description is sorely needed. But, IMHO, freedom of story telling movement is where the story threads of yours shine.
To be honest, I haven’t seen much of you outside of Cafe or MPSIMS, so I’m of no help there. Then again, I’m still pretty new here.
See ya in the funny pages.
Like everyone else has already said (though if the Elite Cadre of the SDMB[sup]®[/sup] is intentionally giving me the cold shoulder, let me know.)
For what it’s worth, my first really helpful reply (a specific answer to a specific, real-world problem) killed the thread. It was unnerving at the time, but I assume that the person who started the thread decided not to waste bandwidth with an answer
I hear ya. In fact, my post to this thread no doubt means that it will sink quite quickly into the abyss.
Good-bye thread.
I am a long-time (and I mean back to the AOL days) lurker who just recently has had the time, means, and confidence to begin posting. I have killed so many threads that I feel I should be sporting a cloak and sickle.
I think I am a better lurker
Now, Igloo, we all know that with breasts like that, you can’t ever really lurk. Does your husband let you go out in public that way?
Couldn’t resist…let it be a reminder to get that HD outrage to HQ ASAP.
(That looks a lot cooler than it really is, doesn’t it?)
Hmmmm…
Maybe if all of the thread killers on the SDMB (I think I’ve killed 114 so far) post to this thread, it will receive 24,000 posts and be hundreds of pages long. Would that be irony or what?
Or maybe this thread is dead right…(hitting “Submit Reply”)…now.
Okay, this thread had taken on a life of its own. (With a little bit of helpful advice for dougie_montie along the way).
This thread should run for at least a week.
Provided that dougie_montie doesn’t post to it again. Then all bets are off
Don’t worry dougie_montie dry spells suck. As previously mentioned, being a thread killer is a common fear.
Just for shits and giggles you could always have a look at a handful of your posts and work out your kill count. I’m sure you’d see you’re not as bad off as you think.
With lissencephalic posters like Desmostylus, who obviously feels it is their call to be a bully, it’s no wonder some threads die off quickly… avoidance
