Recently there have been a lot of posts by people who claim to know how Arabs and/or Muslims really are. If we are truly to fight ignorance, we need to hear from these people themselves.

Please post in this thread if you are an adherent of Islam, or a former adherent, or married to one, or descended from one. Doesn’t matter if you are Sunni, Shia, Sufi, Nation of Islam or other. Doesn’t matter if you’re Arab, Persian, Afghan, Pakistani, Indian, African-American, Arab-American, North African, West African, Sub-Saharan African, Somali, Bosnian, Albanian, Turkish, Indonesian, Tatar, Chechen, Azeri, Indonesian, Filipino, Malaysian, Western Chinese, Turkmeni, Kazakh, Uzbek, Kirghiz, Tajik, or other. Just stand up and be counted, proudly.

Feel free to bust some stereotypes by saying what you really feel about Tuesday’s tragedy. Please don’t be afraid to either criticize or praise the USA’s policies in the Middle East, since most right-thinking dopers know the difference between political disagreement and support for terrorism.

Hi, thanks for the above post. I am including the message below which would most aptly describe the types of feelings Muslims may be going through, especially those in Iraq, Palestine and other places of conflict in which American policy is mostly representative of “state sponsored terrorism”. Interestingly, it is actually by a Non-Muslim.

tclouie, I think you should repost this in a new thread. Your call for SDMB followers of Islam to post is a very good one. I certainly would like to hear the opinions.

I’m an American and I converted to Islam. I was attracted to it because of the gentle, loving side of Islam that gets ignored in the media. The gentle, loving side is what keeps me in Islam, in case anyone is wondering why anybody would want to choose this faith. I am very much at odds with the harshness and nastiness of the fundies. I’ve been supporting the liberal movements in Islam such as Islamic feminism and openness toward all other religions. I’m a Bob Dylan fan. I’m just as American as any of you, dammit.

In your defense, it’s a very small number of fanatics of your faith that give the rest of you a bad name. Just like there’s a very small number of the Christian faith that give the rest of them a bad name.

Both of you beat me to it, but that’s exactly the way I feel. I was horrified when I heard my sister-in-law say she thought we ought to just level the entire Middle East and kill everyone there. This was after our church’s prayer service last night, too. Real Christian thinking, sis. :rolleyes:
