I actually do really, honestly care about misogyny and mistreatment of women. That’s actually something that some folks think is hugely, massively important.

octopus, you’re assuming that, since you got proven wrong, he must’ve used improper tactics. iiandyiiii actually continues to engage with you, while the majority have dismissed you as a troll, with some even getting mad that he’s feeding you.
I’ll also note that iiandyiiii was one of those who gave Huey Freeman a lot of latitude, and, in my opinion, missed out on his racism. He didn’t drive him away–he tried to keep him around, despite Huey having the same sort of hatred for this place as you do.
You’re the one who chooses to hang around here, despite thinking we’re all horrible, unfair, and dishonest. It seems more likely that we make arguments you can’t dismiss, and feel the need to stick around and try to “win.” If we were so clearly wrong, it would be easier for you to leave.
I don’t hate this place or the people in it. I think some of the people in it are damaged. That’s different than thinking the whole place has no value.
As I’ve said before, from a political or ideological standpoint the SDMB has value precisely because of the difference of opinion. Where the problem occurs is when a very vocal, very manipulative subset of the board act in concert to silence others.
For the most part iiandyiiii is a pretty good poster. However, like anyone else he has flaws as well.
Depends what you mean by “silencing”. There is nothing wrong with a “vocal subset” of the board “acting in concert” to shame and call out bigotry, hatefulness and general jerkishness even when it doesn’t rise to the level of a moddable infraction.
The tricky bit, of course, is where one draws the line between bigotry/hatefulness/general jerkishness and legitimate “difference of opinion”. Everybody’s idea of where that line should be drawn is going to be somewhat different, of course.
But given that ordinary posters, no matter how “vocal” or “manipulative” or “concerted”, don’t actually have any power to interfere with the posting privileges of any other posters who aren’t actually violating Board rules, I tend to take complaints about being “silenced” with a large chunk of salt.
Yeah, the idea that speech can silence other speech is already tenuous at best in the real world, but it is definitely not a thing online. Nothing I say can force you to stop your speech.
I know from experience. I’ve been here 11 years now, and, for at least 10 of those I’ve had people who just wanted me to just shut up. Did anything they say ever stop me? No. Have I listened to some who made good points? Sure. But that was my choice. I was never in any way silenced.
Hell, I don’t know how often I’ve seen points that I used to be ridiculed for making being made by other posters and generally accepted. Rather than being silenced, my ideas have spread. The best ideas propagate, even if you hate the speaker.
Well we have at least one innovative thinker who thinks his $5 entitles him to special consideration. Perhaps it has. He got away with calling a poster an asshole in ATMB.
