Doperville Mafia - Forbidden Thread

And here is the forbidden thread to discusss the current Doperville game being run by CoG888

If you are playing in the game, please stay out.
If you have played in the game, no spoilers please.

Everyone else is welcome to comment and analyse the game as it runs.

Well I have to say the crash course **Blaster Master ** is giving to the new players is pretty excellent. There is plenty of good material in there to pick up and learn from and hopefully use later on.

It’s a shame that **twickster ** is looking for a sub so early on. I hope we can get her thoughts on the game.

If anyone wants in I would suggest PM’ing CoG888.

My gut says Oredigger is scum.

I haven’t been following this one closely, but after a brief skim, anyrose is annoying me. She reminds me a bit of faithfool in YSI - oversensitive, over-reactive, and quick to play the martyr card. That really rubs me the wrong way. Some people just don’t seem cut out to play this game…

I think the hardest part for new players, especially if they are playing vanilla in their first game, is not to take it personally.

They probably feel pretty powerless and unable to contribute and if someone jumps on things they have posted as “being scummy”, wonder why they are playing if they feel they have no way or idea how to play the game.

The new players really need to get a few Days under their belt to get the idea. I just hope they last that long.

I’m trying to figure out if anyrose truly feels maligned or if she is playing the part, and I think that is part of the problem with these games. Paranoia trumps sympathy.

I’ll be surprised if Thing Fish turns up Scum. I’ll be even more surprised if Town manages to lynch someone else without a roleclaim.
Blaster Master is bothering me (in a I think he could be scum way, not in a I think he’s a jerk way). What exactly is the case against Thing Fish? That he suggested Townies not defend themselves? Is that really something scum would do? Is that really something Blaster Master would think scum would do?
Troublesome.

I agree, it seems to be hard for some people, but I don’t really get it. It’s a game - we all know it’s a game - what’s the big deal? I remember with faithfool, several people (myself included, IIRC) told her not to take it personally, it’s just a game, it’s all good, etc. gently and helpfully, to little effect.

Agreed. Either way, it annoys me. Get over it and play, already. I guess I’m a heartless bastard

Yeah you are. Sheesh, cut the newb some slack :stuck_out_tongue: .

anyrose, sadly, went from being one of my favorite new players (as of about 36 hours ago) to being a player that I think needs to get lynched because she is just such a shiny distraction. I also don’t understand how the games she describes playing in work. If everyone is doing nothing but roleplaying, and no one is doing analysis how does anyting ever get acomplished?

Mark me down as someone who is also a little sad that twickster is looking to sub, I think she would have been good at this game if she had been able to hang in a bit longer.

Hi all – I felt bad about bailing, but was totally not understanding what was going on and not enjoying that experience. I thought a newbie game meant that the players would be all or mostly newbies, coming in at the same level of cluelessness and figuring out how to play together. It turned out that it was a bunch of people who had either followed other games or actually played in them, so the level of discussion felt cliquey and exclusionary to me. I know that wasn’t necessarily what the dynamic was, but that’s how it felt. I tried for a day or so, but, as I said in my PM asking to be released, reading the thread caused my eyeballs to rotate in opposite directions.

So, that’s why I bailed.

I’ve seen games like the one she describes. They rely on blind luck, power investigative roles and shields to do all the work. I would love to drop a player like Roosh into one of those games and watch the carnage as he writes huge, detailed posts. The longest post you ever see in one of those games, beyond the mod supplied color ones, is maybe 2 paragraphs.

If you aren’t having fun, then you made the right decision.

I wonder if it is even possible to have a truly newbie game at this point. Maybe we could restrict discussion to exclude references to things outside the game, but I’m not sure if that would work.
I’m also not sure if it would be possible to collect a sufficient number of true newbies. Most people who are interested have followed a game or two.

You made the right choice, sadly. I still think that Hal’s game (the little I know of it) should be run, and be truely restricted to players who have never played. This game is really only semi newb friendly, and the vets are doing most of the talking. I think we may want to reboot and try another newb game when this one is over.

When that happens I hope you give it another shot twickster.

Thanks, guys. I wanted to give this a shot because so many people have told me I’d enjoy it and be good at it – but it may well be impossible to create a truly “no previous knowlege” game, since most people who are interested in playing are interested because they’ve observed other games, not because it sounds interesting in the abstract.

Well we can always give it a try. I’d suggest a newbie game for people who have never played before (reading is okay), but with the understanding that references to other games, other boards, or anything outside the thread itself is frowned upon.
That would force people to explain ideas and points of view explicitly, for example:
I’d have to say something like: “It seems to me that a viable scum strategy would be to lead a lynch of a fellow scum early in the game and leverage that action for the rest of the game”
rather than
“You know, the thing that storyteller did in M2”

I think we could do that.

I agree. And what I liked about what I knew of Hal’s game was the advisory board aspect. Having 2 or three non players helping out each side and giving advce that you could actually trust as having no agenda.

If I were in the game, I’d totally be trying to derail the Thing Fish lynch. We really need more of that on Day One.

Heh, that’s where I LEARNED about Mafia actually. I read games like that over and over (in MafiaScum) while waiting between reading Doper Games. I was like you- I read up on EVERYthing before I started playing here.

So yeah, I try to bring in ideas that I’ve seen over there to this side of the world, but it’s tricky. As Dopers ARE an analytical bunch. But when I do that sorta thing, I get the big mondo-wordy posts. Over there, I’d just change my style and blend in quite easily methinks.

I’m getting a Townie read from Thing fish myself actually, as from what **Ryjae **just commented. He’s been quite helpful in death, and actually what he proposed was something that I believe in- he just phrased it awkwardly into the “don’t defend yourself” sorta phrasing. But in reality its the “leave as much information as you can before you go” sorta thing more so.
The key is he’s being lynched for coming up with a Bad Idea. That’s a Null Tell, and easy easy vote for the Scum to join up with.

This whole first day reminds me of FireFly- where I came up with my INCREDIBLY Bad idea of “Mass RoleClaim” and BlaM was heavily against it.
What it led to though was a massive clusterf*ck of posts to the point where the boards broke. But that’s because I knew I was town, and that yeah I made a bad idea, but I stuck to trying to show my towniness through it all.
Here, ThingFish has kinda resigned himself to his fate, but he’s doing it in the Towniest way possible by trying to be helpful on his way out.

So increase my suspicion of BlaM, but not by much- because as it turned out in firefly, BlaM was Town there too. Townie vs. Townie always ends up happening, it’s just the OTHER votes that come on board that you have to watch out for.

After that last post, I am now willing to lay money on The Unkempt One being scum.

Guess they didn’t need a sub for me after all.

Like twickster, I was also overwhelmed by the interactions between the more experienced players. I could not keep up because most of the time, like today, I am blocked from non work related sites, and when I do have access, I can only spare a minute or two. Playing Mafia here requires A LOT of free time during the day, which, alas, I don’t have
