Doritos "Hot" Flavors

I like lime fine in some contexts. But on a corn chip is not one of those contexts.

Yeah, we get the Hellman’s lime mayo here, as well as McCormick’s and I think some Mexican brand. Even get the Flaming Hot Cheetos with lime. Peanuts with chili and lime. Potato chips. Dried lima beans with chili and lime. Beer with chili and lime. A whole panoply of fruits with chili and lime. And, of course, tajin, which seems to be the universal seasoning salt around here, made with chili, lime, and salt (particularly great with butter or mayo on corn on the cob.)

I admit the powdered stuff took me a little to get used to as it has a bit of an edge to it that regular lime juice doesn’t quite have. Like a bit of that citric acid kick you’d get from Super Sour Tearjerkers. But I’ve long been used to lime with tortilla chips, as your pico de gallo and lots of table salsas here have a strong lime component to them.

OK, in pico de gallo or other salsas, it might be fine. Maybe it’s just the lime flavoring powder that I don’t like.

Yeah, the first few times I had those chili & lime snacks, I couldn’t help but being reminded of green Froot Loops. That lime flavor reminded me of those. But I eventually got used to it and I guess recontextualized the flavor.

Just wait until the movie comes out. No, I am not kidding - a real-life, feel good story about the immigrant who came up with idea while working as a janitor at the Doritos factory: http://www.slashfilm.com/flamin-hot-cheetos-movie/

Close. That’s the Flaming Hot Cheetos guy. But Doritos and Cheetos are both Frito-Lay products, so close enough.

Kinda :smack:; kinda not. I’m still processing the fact that I was aware of the movie to begin with.

I venture that you listen to Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me.

Addicted, yes - but I knew the right answer before Bluff the Listener. Sad.

Are Blaze the ones where the bag says something along the lines of “it’s like licking the face of the sun” ? If so, I would like them much better if they had about 1/3 of the thermonuclear RIT dye on them. The flavor is nice, the heat is good, but there’s far too much of it. Like all their other flavors, somehow they think more is better but it’s really just messy and frankly, overkill.

Whenever the subject of Doritos comes up, those of us of a certain age will reminisce how good they were 30 years ago and I’ve always thought the biggest reason is they didn’t have so much damned powder on them. A few months back I saw a bag of taco flavored, packaged like this and I stupidly thought it was going to be a true throwback to the original recipe. Needless to say, they were over seasoned like all the other ones. I wish they’d come out with a “lite” version. I know there was a joke (?) about creating ones marketed to women where they would have less messy flavoring to get all over our delicate lady fingers, and, condescension aside, I think that sounds like a pretty good idea.

The UK seem to have different flavors in than the US. Do they do the Roulette Doritos bags in the US? Those are fun - most of the chips are at best lightly spicy and then you get the occasional one that is insanely hot. And they all look the same.

Walkers (the Frito-Lay brand of potato chips in the UK) have just released a “Max Strong” line (“Perfect with beer”). The Chilli and Lime ones are about where most so-called “spicy” snacks land. The Jalapeno and Cheese ones are as strong as I’ve encountered in a potato chip (and they do go very well with beer). I haven’t tried the mid-range ones.

Oh, and I like the lime Doritos.

Anyone who eats that crap on a steady basis is shortening his life.

(We could use a puke smiley.)

That sounds awesome! One more thing UK does better than US.

I agree with one of the posters…hot just to be hot without any flavor is not my cup of tea.

IMHO - there will never be any other flavor of Dorito that will be as good as the regular nacho cheese. The old-time taco flavor is pretty good too. It’s one of those things where I try the new flavor and find myself going right back to the originals, never buying the new flavor again - usually not even finishing the bag. Now I don’t even bother trying the new flavors.

I dunno, I bought a bag of the “Blaze” ones and thought they were pretty tame. IME anything mass-market which claims to be “hotter than the fires of Hell” overstates its spiciness by at least a factor of 10.

I just looked up the details of the Roulette ones - the non-spicy ones are the basic Tangy Cheese chips. The spicy ones are Tabasco-flavoured. They’re a tad spicy, particularly if you’re asthmatic.

But yeah, don’t eat Doritos on a “steady basis” no matter what variant you prefer.

ETA: I need to say the word “spicy” again. Just because.

I swear they had something like that here once. Ring any bells for anyone? Maybe it wasn’t Doritos, but another fast food product. Just a limited time thing.

ETA: Yeah, here back in 2015. And they were also called Roulette.

I’m doing shopping this afternoon, so I’ll keep an eye out. I’m not much of a Doritos eater, as I don’t like the usual nacho cheese or cool ranch type (though as a kid, I’d occasionally eat the latter; hated the former.) The taco ones are good, though, and I like the Tapatio (Mexican hot sauce) ones as well.

OK, today at the store I saw they also had Xplosion (orange bag) , guacamole (green bag), and fajitas flavors in addition to the Fuego and Nitro. Didn’t see any Salsa Brava. At any rate, I bought the Xplosion flavor, which was advertised as cheese + chile pepper. I think this is one you might like. It’s got some tang to it, but it’s a cheesy/buttermilky tang to it, and no lime flavor I can find. So it’s kind of like your nacho cheese dorito flavor, but a bit cheesier and tangier with a reasonable kick of spice to it, definitely something that would be considered spicy by middle America.

Also, I did find the Blaze chips at Walgreens on the way back. Stopped just to see if they had them. I didn’t find them hot at all at first, but after about eight chips, it built up and they were a good bit spicier than the usual spicy chip offerings, so I give them credit for trying. I’m not entirely sure I like the flavor, though. I can’t quite tell if I feel like it’s missing something or if there’s a flavor that is registering as slightly “off” to me. Right now, as I’m tasting them, I think it’s more so the latter, but I can’t quite place it. That said, I have torn through 2/3 of the 3 1/8 oz bag already, so it can’t be all bad.

ETA: OK, great, I finished the bag. So today’s lunch was about 700 calories worth of Doritos and Takis. I’m sure my body will be loving me.
