I had a few of these “X D-13” chips today. We’re supposed to decide on a name for the flavor, which I have interpreted for myself to mean we’re supposed to figure out what the heck flavor it is.
Well, it seemed clear to me from the instant I opened up the bag and smelled the chips. My guess is:
Cheeseburger.
Though to be honest
There’s not any cheese flavor I can detect, so maybe just hamburger?!
Anyway, the mustard flavor was unmistakeable Everything else seems to be there too: onion, pickle, even sort of a “toasted bun” flavor! Beef, not so much.
For the record, I do not like the taste of these chips.
::fingers in ears:
There’s only one “flavor” of Doritos, the original Toasted Corn. Fried corn tortilla triangles with salt on 'em. Salt and nothing else, until you dip them into your nice hot salsa.
The impression that they started putting all kinds of powders and gunk on them is surely just a bad dream. Especially since according to that bad dream the powders and gunk all smell like a bag of dry dog food.
I think it’s supposed to be a facsimile of a hot flavor, for people who can’t handle hot flavors. I was hooked on the Smoky Red BBQ flavor, and of course they discontinued it. A lot of people can’t handle hot and spicy to the point where you have to rinse your mouth afterwards. The X-D13 flavor gives the impression of hot, without the lingering scald. The Ned Flanders version of Smoky Red BBQ.
Can you even buy normal doritos anymore? All I can find at the local grocery store is “nacho cheesier” style, or the multitude of other assorted crap flavors.
Someone had a bag at the cookout I went to today, and I thought they were delicious. Definitely “hamburger” flavor - strong mustard, ketchup and pickle, with a bit of bun and onion in there. I saw “beef tallow” on the ingredients, but I didn’t taste much beefy in it. I thought it was more like “sauce sandwich.”
I was thinking who can afford to waste $4 on an unidentified flavor. It could easily be something like Survivor Guano Bat Droppings, or Stuntman Worm Chow. Fritos could give out samples if they cared about naming it, instead of trying to sucker somebody into buying it.
Doritos aren’t tostitos. Unless I’m wrong, the Dorito was never a plain totilla chip, but has always been a flavored corn chip.
The wiki doritos page describes it as a a brand of flavored tortilla chip introduced in 1961.
They do mention a “Toasted Corn” flavor, but indicate it is regional and “original” (their quotes, not mine). I can safely say that I’ve never heard of that flavor.
I think that “nacho cheesier” is basically a marketing gimmick for their “nacho cheese” flavor. . .that flavor that I consider the original. And, I have a bag of “nacho cheese” (not -ier) on my desk right now.
A friend of mine assures me that the flavour is “you know when you kind of vomit in your mouth without really vomitting” because everyone knows the taste but can’t quite identify it. Kind of like a one hit wonder heard on the radio.
Toasted corn flavor is just the plain unseasoned ones. We used to have 4 flavors available. Toasted Corn, Taco, Nacho Cheese, and Sour Cream & Onion. I liked Sour Cream & Onion better than the Cool Ranch. I still would like it to come back.
