Dr. Who Season 2 on Sci-Fi tonight

So? Just because one leader doesn’t, does that mean another leader is going to follow his example? If one person is dishonorable, does that mean that every person in that society is? That the soldiers on that ship – who may have condemned their leaders actions and acted honorably if they were in that position – should die because of that?

So? The Nazis were willing to kill millions, but after they surrendered, we didn’t slaughter them. It’s a basic rule of civilized combat that you don’t kill an enemy who has surrendered. Can you come up with any example where this was considered anything other than an anethema?

And unless there’s a credible immediate threat, it’s all the same thing. After all, you don’t know whether they would be a threat or not, do you? Whether the chance is ten to one or a billion to one, the threat is there. It’s just a matter of degree.

Their FTL radio operator, for one. And don’t you think someone on that ship might have mentioned to someone on another ship that they were planning to invade Earth and would have noticed they didn’t come back? Letting the ship leave would have been uncertain, but blasting it out of the sky is hardly likely to solve the proble: the next time, it’ll be a dozen ships who are ready for your weapon.

Oh, I don’t know. It’s kind of like the saying about car thieves – the point isn’t to make your car impossible to steal, the point is to make stealing your car enough of a hassle that he goes to the next car. When the Sycorax are deciding who to attack next, they might decide to look for a civilization that doesn’t have warship-destroying blasters.

It’s the only way to be sure
I don’t know if I agree with Jone’s decision and I can go either way on it. They did come to a peace agreement as bizarre as it was. And while Earth does have a big death ray now, it might be kind of like an Iranian/North Korean nuclear bomb scenario. Just enough firepower to really piss the big guys off.

Although I suspect that the aliens realized that after their parlour tricks failed, they would have to resort to their secondary weapons - swords and energy whips vs Earth rifles and artillery.

If they’d wanted to scare off the invaders, they should have just read a list of all the aliens who tried to invade Earth already, and then said “You want the Earth? Fine, take it. Just be prepared to fight off half the galaxy to keep it!”

It would be a good thing using that analogy; we can’t mess with Korea because htey have nuclear weapons; that’s why Iran wants them so badly.

I still liked the ‘I can take you down with six words.’

Took me two or three passes with the DVR to realize the upshot of that.

What did the Doctor say, anyways

Look, in war, there is a term used to describe anyone who kills a foe that has already surrendered: war criminal.

There are all sorts of reasons for this, both moral and practical, and it was completely unjustified.

I believe it was
“Doesn’t she look tired to you?”

Note the press conference at the end with the prime minister fighting allegations that her health was suffering.
According to the closed captioning, he said “Don’t you think she looks tired?”

Thanks, I had completely forgotten that when he stands up afterwards, he’s David Tennant.

Ah okay. I saw the end but I couldn’t hear what the Doctor was saying in that guy’s ear.

Did they surrender? I know that they went away, but did they surrender?

I was close! Same sentiment, still only 6 words!

They reached an agreement. It would be kind of like dropping a third atomic bomb on Japan after the signing on the Missouri.

So in retrospect it was kind of an unnecessary dick move.

I won’t weigh in on Harriet – right or wrong, it’s what she did. I just want to say that I do truly like the new doctor.

And whatever shortcomings “New Earth” has, it was a bit interesting --I’m still convinced that they shouldn’t have ever left without insuring Cassandra was dead – she simply can’t be trusted. I’m certain that she transferred back into her old body the minute they turned their backs (though it was a sweet moment when she told herself, how truly beautiful she was (creating her own lovely memory of last being told she was beautiful).

Anyway – great to have it back on the schedule here!

I had hopes of the hat and scarf returning as well – mainly because he’d look so good in them.

I wasn’t sure during “The Christmas Invasion,” but even though “New Earth” was kind of meh on plot, Tennant definitely grew on me. I’m going to enjoy watching him.

Not sure if you all know this but between Eccleston’s regeneration episode and The Christmas Invasion there was a little 7 minute short shown in the UK during some charity drive they call Children in Need. In it there was some IMHO key interplay between the confused Rose and the new Doctor.

I feel it should have been grafted into the beginning of the Christmas Invasion but
I’ve since read that it will be included in the 2nd season boxset as a bonus.

Similarly, they were these little 2 minutes snippets that were prequels to each of the 13 episodes of season 2, called tardisodes.

You might still find them on the official BBC Dr Who website. Some of these also contain what I feel is key information.

I’m not sure if these will make the boxset.

Just a quick heads up - do NOT miss the episode entitled “The Girl in the Fireplace”.
I think it’s episode 4.

When Rose (accidentally) touched herself as a baby, we get flying monsters trying to eat the world. Yet young Cassandra holds differently-bodied Cassandra without any apparent reprecussions. How do we explain that?

Not quite right, Rose kept her Father from dying, that was what caused the rift or rip.

But something horrific happened as a result of her touching herself, right? I remember the Doctor repeatedly warning her against it…
