Last weekend’s Dr Who. So what’s people’s thoughts?
You couldn’t really have come up with a more blatant parody of the Iraq war if you’d tried;
Non-existent Weapons Of Mass Destruction that can be deployed in 45secs.
The Prime Minister wants a pre-emptive strike, but has to go to the UN first.
Aliens provoking a war in order to make a grab at natural resources.
General invite to the universe to submit bids to share in the spoils.
I’m surprised they got away with showing it in the middle of an election.
However, just to point out one particular nit-pick. What in the name of blazes is the entire UK militant arsenal doing on the web in an easy-use, point’n’click website, protected by a single 7 letter password?
Just so you can try it out; it’s at www.missles-online.mil.uk. Enter password “buffalo” and click on the submarine icon. Select in the further menus which submarine and missile you’d like, then click on the “Your Shopping Cart” icon to deliver it to your desired target. Please note that post-code is a compulsory field. Gift wrap options available.
I love those dustbins with sink plungers and egg-whisks. This time they can do stairs!
(do you know it never occured to me that the Daleks are tanks - it’s so bloody obvious when you think about it, but the penny never dropped until now).
I too hope that the Royal Navy takes rather more care with it’s subs and missiles than that!
That’s why I always hated Davros, without him the Daleks where a race of beings with motivations and asperations. Conquer everything and kill everyone maybe, but they had them. Davros just reduced them to machines and mindless autometa carrying out his will. Spoilt them if you ask me. Right, where’s my anorak …
I’ve only just watched the ep, having been in Belgium for a few days (and having only just survived a beer festival in Mons…), and enjoyed it tremendously. Although how Rose’s boyfriend was able to guide the missile directly at Downing Street wasn’t really explained - once you accepted that he could get at the website, that is.
Of course, the Daleks have almost always been able to negotiate stairs, certainly since “Planet of the Daleks” in 1973…
I think they should’ve had the little piggy alien(s) as the baddies, what was that bit of the story there for anyway? Evil piggy aliens would have been more frightening than:
Big-fat-farty baddies that turn out to be some unscary cross between ET and the Alien IV newborn – that is vunerable to attack with pickled onions WTF? Dr Who baddies are traditionally bulletproof if not nukeproof, why now so puny?
And when was the Doctor last involved with UNIT? Have the whole military used the same unchanged password for all their IT systems since the 1980s?
It’s easy to pull apart a “kid’s program”, but if they’re going to attempt satire (which surely wasn’t aimed at kids) then maybe the scripts could make allowances for the gee^M^M^M over twelves. Either that or repeat it at a later hour when we older children are less likey to be sober?
Yeah, like you’d almost think it was some kind of family entertainment programme designed to appeal to children and adults. Where was the heavy-weight political analysis, difficult emotional issues and hard-hitting social commentary we’ve come to expect from the BBC at 7pm on a Saturday?
Rubbish good fun, rather as it used to be. One thing which I find rather jarring is that it’s mainly filmed in Cardiff and Swansea. The bit on the first episode where the bin eats the black lad was my street - I remember the film crews being there a few months ago. The snowy street outside the theatre where Dickens performed was my wife’s work - she was cleaning fake snow out of her office for days since all the windows were open in the heat of August. And seeing a London bus crashed into the St David’s Shopping Centre rather ruins the story’s momentum!
That’s pretty cool. The BBC is really going all out with the online bells and whistles in support of this show, aren’t they? Much more than the usual show site one comes to expect.
You folks in the UK and Canananananada are lucky. One day, we in the US will get to see the new Who.
But the ratings have proved it to be more of a pull than “Celebrity Wrestling”!
I probably shouldn’t post it here, but I did see a video spoiler of this weeks “Dalek” episode, the wobbly pepper pots of old have had quite the make over
