I watch a lot of cartoons, because I have a 4 year old boy. Most of them I can handle. I can even deal with the Smurfs… but this DragonBall Z crap is just too much. It is so boring and so horribly animated!!! Who makes this crap and WHY?

I definitely wouldn’t call it “horribly animated” but I do have problems following the storyline- or maintaining enough interest to try and follow the storyline. Its good to have on in the background while doing chores what with the explosions and purty colors.
My roomie is addicted to Drag-on Ball Z. In the shows defense, it is a lot better in the original Japanese. And the first series is cute sometimes. You have to know a bit about japanese culture to get a lot of it, but it isn’t any worse than Power Rangers.
The thing is with DBZ, like other anime, its kind of a part of Japanese culture. Also, in the shows defense, the original Dragon Ball was MUCH better in my opinion. The problem is, people liked the violent portions, so DBZ became popular as well, and it had like 3 times as much violence.
Well Opal, the Japanese really make cartoons like that for children, not adults (unlike some American cartoons which slip in references only adults would really get). It also has the campiness that the Japanese like, as well as cultural references. Also, DBZ is mostly about the fighting, which is why the battle scenes take up most of the cartoon, and they also take several episodes as well.
Actually, Anime is rarely produced for a certain demographic. Most often it’s used to appeal to a large variety of audiences. Just like American T.V… If you wanna talk about childrens shows, look at Hello Kitty, Microman and Pokemon. Not Dragonball. Although Dragon Ball Z does suck.
Another thing that bugs me about it is you can’t tell the adults from the children unless they are next to each other. They are drawn the exact same way. And their hair is just stupid. Not as stupid as the Sailor Moon hair, but close.

Agreed! I hate it. I also dislike the POKIMON cartoons, but Dragonball Z just plane sucks! It gives me a headache to try to keep up with the rapid fire and inane character chatter, the background bites, the characters themselves are crappy and often ugly and I’ve gotten very, very weary of the typical Japanese ‘fierce stare’ along with everyone and their brother knowing martial arts.
Cartoon network just has to be a bunch of cheap SOBs.
I’m a big anime fan, but the way Dragonball Z is drawn really bothers me. It takes the worst elements of anime and American cartooning and combines them in the most garish way possible. And, no, I can’t follow the plot either. Given that I go to an engineering school, it has quite a large following here, and it is often playing on all four TV screens in the cafeteria, and at a hideous volume. It makes me want to pull my hair into a ponytail, open my eyes as wide as they will go, take a big running start, scream something incomprehensible, and take a big martial-arts kick at the TV (while the background blurs appropriately), and probably trigger an explosion that would demolish the whole building.
Heck is where you go when you don’t believe in Gosh.
Normally I’d defend DBZ here, but…well, it does get pretty damn boring, especially during the Goku/Frieza fight that lasts roughly 15-20 episodes. Funny how the last few are apparently only a few minutes in “real time,” though.
That being said, the show does get pretty good next season during the Cell saga, from what I’ve heard. And as boring as some bits of the series might be, the movies are definitely NOT. Dead Zone and The World’s Strongest are excellent. And by the way, if you want to get a condensed version of the plot of the TV series, pick up the manga. It’s what the show would have been like if the animators had been able to keep the pace up instead of putting in about a million filler episodes.

Hey man I watch DragonBall Z. I think that the show is tight as hell. The animation is like it is because it’s made in japan or somewhere over there. But it’s just a fun show to watch full of whoopass.
Even better is Kosuke Fujishima’s stuff. (I’ve long since become sated with most of Takahashi’s stuff, although the ‘Mermaid’ Saga still gets me. Ranma overload, basically, spoiling Lum, MI, Inu Yasha, Rumik Tales, etc for me to boot.)
Fujishima’s Oh!/Ah! My Goddess! is wonderful, and his earlier You’re Under Arrest! is better still.
That would have been put better as “It’s better than Power Rangers”.
How’s this… it is far preferable to a Barney marathon.
