Dragonball movie set to roll

Link to the story, no* real* spoilers.

Anime fanboys, please discuss.

I’m really curious as to how this is going to work. I just don’t see it translating well to the silver screen.

OK, “Spike” from Buffy is playing Piccolo. I’m am SO seeing this no matter how bad it is. That’s just too funny for words. I hope that somewhat like the anime,

battling the bad guys in the later stuff is more a team effort and that they recruit half the beaten villains for their team

Anyone want to take bets on if it will be better than the original live-action Dragonball movie?

I’ll probably check it out, but I have very little expectation of it being anything close to good.

I think Dragonball had a lot of great elements, and a lot of mediocre and even downright terrible elements. I think a live-action (heavily assisted by CGI) movie series (or even better, an animated one using a new/different art style than the traditional DBZ look) that compressed the series into an ongoing line of movies could be really good. But I think for it to work well, you’d have to take major liberties with the source material. I think the way to do it, is make each movie one saga, start with the original story arc and do at least 3 movies of “Dragonball” before you move on to the “-Z” stuff.

Have a progression from light-hearted adventure to more dramatic and mature stories (I’m talking about a decade or longer franchise). The big things I would change would be to make ressurections a rare thing, not let it become ‘the Goku show’ (have other people win the big end fights sometimes, like Gohan with Cell), and let Goku die. Please, if it makes it to Cell’s story, Goku dies and stays dead, the show continues with Gohan (don’t make him revert to being a weenie like he did, but don’t turn him into Goku v.2 either). Have a progression of time as characters grow old and pass on the responsibilities.

At least, that’s how I’d do it.
