Dream a Little Dream of...a Fiddle?

Ten years or so ago, I saw a movie that had a version of ‘Dream a Little Dream’ that I really liked, but the futile search for it is starting to make me doubt my mental faculties. So, please, pull me back from the brink of utter insanity.

The song cover in question features a female lead, and I’d swear there was a fiddle in there, too, at times playing in reply to the vocalist. It had sort of a folksy yet poppy feel to it, reminiscent of the Sundays or Sixpence None the Richer. I’m pretty sure the song comes over the closing credits, and I keep picturing two characters dancing in the middle of a suburban street at night, but that scene could be pure fabrication, or from a different movie.

When I started looking for this song sometime last year, I figured it must have been the title track from that great Corey Brothers vehicle. After hearing both versions on the soundtrack listing, though, I’m certain they’re not it. Then, I heard about another cover, this one from the movie French Kiss, by The Beautiful South. That all sounded very familiar, so I rushed out to get a hold of it. That one didn’t seem right, either. It has a much more slow-jazzy feel to it, but I suppose the Lens of Time could have warped the song in my head. Anyway, I moved on. Then, something reminded me that there had been a sequel to Dream a Little Dream (however unfortunately). Could that be it? I think I did actually see some of this movie – it had to do with magic sunglasses or some such crap – but I can’t find a soundtrack listing anywhere for it. I thought of trying to find the video, but I couldn’t even find the first movie, much less this dismal piece of sequel.

And that is where my quest stands thus far. Does anyone with a sharper memory than mine remember DALD II, or know of any movie or song matching my descriptions? Please help so I can get on with my life.

I remember both movies. Merideth Salenger was HOT! I also have the soundtrack to the first one on cassette, and I see it is available on CD at Amazon. But I’m afraid I can’t help you with finding the version you describe. Incidentally, the first movie is now available on DVD.

As for the second movie, yes, it was about some sort of magic sunglasses. It was a bizzarre movie and I don’t remember enough about it to say anything about the music. As far as I can tell, it is not available on video.

Could it be the Mama Cass version? I seem to remember that being a mellow kind of folky thing with possibly a fiddle in the mix somewhere…

Thanks, but I should’ve excluded the Mama Cass version, too. It could definitely be called folky, though.
peritrochoid, thanks for letting me know about the dvd. I just put it on my Netflix queue, just in case there’s a song in there that’s not on the soundtrack.
