Dream games that will never be made

I want a super hero game that has the customization of City of Heroes but with modern graphics and is single player. Basically the “Bioware Formula” but with super heroes and super powers.

I want SWTOR but single player, not MMO. Not just because I don’t want other people around but I want the MMO’ness removed from the game mechanics.

<claps hands> Make these happen!

Its not quite everything you asked for, but have you played mount and blade? (if you havent, try warband - thats the best version)
its a strategy/rpg where you control a medieval-esque warrior and can start off from a simple fighter and gain levels, wealth and reputation until you’re a king with your own towns, cities, armies etc

I’d like all RPG games to share a common platform and have modular unit implementation so I could play LOTR Battle for Middle Earth with zerg instead of orcs. Or defend Helm’s Deep with siege tanks instead of catapults.

:smack:

I’ve had that game sitting in my library for quite some time now, and just haven’t gotten around to trying it yet. I had somehow decided that it didn’t have much in the way of rpg or strategy (that it was mostly action/simulation).

There is a Deadliest Warrior game that covers some of that ground.

it probably is more action/sim - but there’s a good deal of rpg elements thrown in. you have skills, levels, even a party (other heros that level up and can’t ‘die’ in combat like your army can)
you can get married (not sure if kids are in it though - marrying is usually a political choice… trying to make a bond with whichever lords family)
you get quests and stuff too

one word of advice - when you start out its pretty darn hard. dont give up on it right away, it gets easier as you get used to the action-combat system and you get more powerful. at the start i tend to lose a lot.

Many years ago (probably late 90’s) I read about a game in development called “Guardians: Agents of Justice.” This would have been a turn-based, squad level isotropic game with superheroes, including a highly customizable power system. If I remember correctly the system was going to be based on the Heroes RPG, which basically lets you create any power you want if you can pay for it. Somewhere along the line it got cancelled, and I still mourn.

So, basically X-Com gameplay mixed with City of Heroes customization. Just take my money.

I thought of Mount & Blade as well, but I think that it leaves a lot to be desired in terms of improving towns and keeps (especially in terms of the mechanics for raising an army). I very much hope that later installments of the series drastically expand on it.

I think that the Suikoden game has elements of keep-building. At least the one I played was a JRPG with 108 playable characters. You spend a lot of time going around recruiting new people, each of which goes to your town/keep when they aren’t in your party.

Hardcore MMOFRPG. Most Carebear constraints removed. World is dynamic and play is much more open-ended than normal. Multiple kingdoms of all flavors of the rainbow. Focus is on the kingdom not the PC (top down vs. bottom up), PC’s essentially take on a role within the power structure, and are in command of X number of NPCs (or can go lonewolf rogue if desired). Empires rise, empires die, intrigue, dealmaking, & backstabbing galore.

Won’t ever get made because it is too bold, too audacious, and game companies are very wary anymore of risky designs, and specifically of making anything where one faction can lose permanently, thus hurting the feelings of the poor widdle players. But I am convinced that there is a market for that kind of game, with enough players intrigued by the risk vs. reward angle to make it profitable for the devs.

I would like the real Fallout 3 (that was never completed) to be made, perhaps using a similar system to the new XCOM tactical game system. I’m excited about the new Wasteland 2 which looks really good, but would love it if they made updated Fallout games using the old isometric system though updated with modern graphics and such. At the same time, I definitely want them to keep making Fallout 4 using the FPS format that I loved in Fallout 3 and NV. I want it all.

Would love to see a Total War game that uses something like Civilization on the strategic side, starting at around 3000 BC and going at least up to the early 19th century (I don’t think TW tactical would work very well for modern battles, though maybe if they used something like Company of Heroes 2 for that part of the fighting it would work). I actually expect a game like this in the future, though, so it doesn’t really fit the bill of the OP.

Whole Earth Simulator. Just like it sounds.

They already made one.

You’re in it.

Where are the Save and Load buttons?

Screw the save and load buttons - where is the fucking “reset” button?

I want the slow motion, fast motion and rewind button.

I don’t know, but it sounds like you might like EVE Online?
Anyway, I’m not that into games these days, but has anyone made a Total War: Fantasy yet? Moderately-detailed tactical medieval combat, but with units like giants, demons, etc. added. (I’d call it “Total War: Middle Earth”, but I wouldn’t want it too specific to LOTR)

Ideally with a strategic overlay (“If I attack Erewhonopolis, I’ll lose a lot of my experienced swordsmen, but when I take the city, I’ll be able to re-animate a lot of the defenders as skeletons, which would work as long as the other side doesn’t have too much cavalry…”)

Will ACTUALLY not get made because trusting the players to behave the way you think they should for your ‘player driven’ game to be awesome is a recipe for brutal, ugly failure.

Plus, this game pretty much always exists, except it’s Sci Fi, not fantasy, and called “Eve Online”. It is best described as…niche.

King Arthur: The Roleplaying Wargame more or less fits the bill. It doesn’t have as much depth as a Total War game, though.

I almost mentioned EO, but it does indicate that such a more open model could potentially work. I’m going pure Darwinian here; it will be brutal and ugly for those who don’t get their act together. I’m essentially proposing that the power structure be completely realigned, and NOT be based on the individual, or geared towards the individual, but be based on the kingdom/organization first.

Plus, I am an inveterate role-player (in the truest sense of the term), but “role-playing” servers often end up as miserable failures from that viewpoint, don’t they? In my conception, if you are the Head of the Elven Trade Guild, your role within that power structure will help to ensure that you “play” that role to the hilt, because it will by necessity mean that you must interact with other players to ensure maximum profit for your guild.

Shadowbane. It died.
