That’s pretty much it. The only time I’ve seen the untucked dress shirt and tie look is:
Fraternity cocktail party (in the 90s)
Later in the evening at a weding reception
Businessman on a bender
20-something mailroom guy
kids at a bar-mitzvah reception
Prep school kid after a fistfight
Clearly the common themes with this look are “dress shirt and tie are typically required where I hang out” and “my attitude and behavior are contrary to actually wearing it properly (IOW drunk, immature, slovenly).”
Hipster. Very in thing around here, but I’m in an area where white people are the minority anyway, so it takes very little to stand out. The hipster thing seems to be the most common way to proclaim “Hey, I am not hispanic!”
Yeah, I work in academia and I sometimes see students dressed this way, presumably because they’re giving a class presentation or going to a “fancy” event. I’ve rarely if ever seen this look on a man past college age.
It’s good, in these difficult times to see some international agreement:
Kazuhiro Kokubo excluded from the opening cermony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics for unapologetically flouting the team dress code.
In response to the numerous complaints over his appearance - his shirt was also untucked and his tie was hanging loose - Kokubo was told to apologise before the media.
