Friends don't let friends wear short sleeve shirts with a tie

It’s never acceptable.

Ever.

I don’t care how old you are.

I don’t care what profession you are in.

I don’t care how common it is in your office or what your coworkers wear.

I don’t care how nice the tie or shirt is.

Don’t care how hot it is.

Even in uniforms where it may be authorized (military). Just because it’s authorized doesn’t mean its a good choice.

Guys running around in short sleeve shirts with ties on look ridiculous and are almost impossible to take seriously. If I can’t trust you to make the most basic decisions when dressing yourself how can I trust your opinion on important topics in the workplace?

The old men running around out there doing it. Where are their families? Please. Help your elders.

(I think I may have forgotten the ONLY time it’s okay to wear a short sleeve shirt with at tie. That’s when you are wearing a jacket over the top so people can’t see the short sleeves but you want to keep a little cool. If you take the coat off you BETTER take off the tie too.)

You forgot “when you were four and had to be dressed up in the summer” as being allowed, but yes, I agree.

Back when I had to wear a tie to work, I wore short sleeves when it was hot out. And who the hell are you, to tell me I was wrong? Why do you think they make short-sleeve dress shirts? If I worked with you, I’d deliberately wear short sleeves every day.

Wear short sleeve shirts every day. More power to you.

I’m sure you looked ridiculous with your tie on though. Did no one have the heart to tell you? Maybe you are the company president or something?

Here’s two good reasons to wear short sleeve shirts with ties.

  1. You work at IBM. In 1955.

  2. You’re in a movie called Falling Down.

Friends don’t let friends wear ties.

Back in my grandfather’s day, it was under-shirt, shirt, tie, waistcoat, jacket. Back in my father’s day, it was under-shirt, shirt, tie, jacket. When I was younger it was shirt, tie, jacket. For me now, it’s shirt. Fuck the fashionistas who put constriction before function and comfort.

And the next logical step would be…?

Sure, except when it gets in the way of function and comfort, which I expect would most of the time.

But Sipowicz does it!

hmm, some uniforms mandate a short sleeve and a tie, if the only choice is short sleeves and tie, I guess that’s what you wear.

I’ve seen business people in Hawaii wearing short sleeves, shorts, and a tie. Walking down the street in broad daylight and everything.

If I had to wear a tie to work, I’d wear it with a short sleeve shirt. I’d also wear a printed t-shirt underneath. The tie would probably be a clip-on too.

“fashion” is for people who need to be told how to dress.

So… I’m the bay guy?

Good advice if you are heading for the runways of Paris. For the rest of us, I like to see a computer tech or an engineer in short sleeves and tie. Dressy enough to show he is professional but still able to do actual work. Next someone is going to try to tell us that pocket protectors aren’t cool. Sheesh.

And short sleeves UNDER a jacket? No, no, no. I mean, you’re wearing a jacket, what would be the point of wearing short sleeves? That is one of the only times short sleeves and a tie are wrong.

Seconded

Living people should not dress like dead ones

No pants!

You can pry my ties from my cold, dead neck. I take pride in my ties.

Serious question: What about a long-sleeve shirt and a tie, sleeves rolled up?

If I had to wear a tie to work, I’d either change jobs or work hard to reach a level where I wasn’t told what to wear.

Supported.
