Friends don't let friends wear short sleeve shirts with a tie

Good advice if you are heading for the runways of Paris. For the rest of us, I like to see a computer tech or an engineer in short sleeves and tie. Dressy enough to show he is professional but still able to do actual work. Next someone is going to try to tell us that pocket protectors aren’t cool. Sheesh.

And short sleeves UNDER a jacket? No, no, no. I mean, you’re wearing a jacket, what would be the point of wearing short sleeves? That is one of the only times short sleeves and a tie are wrong.

That’s all we need—more stereotypical IT dorks.

I’m all about sensible work-fashion. Most ‘grown up’ businesses the corporate culture is slacks, dress shirt (long sleeve), no tie and always roll your sleeves up a notch or two. Sometime a tie is classy at work, I like that. But a big ‘no-no’ is a short sleeve dress shirt… adult men shouldn’t wear these (just like shorts).

On the few occasions I’ve worn a tie here, it’s mostly been with a short-sleeved shirt, because they simply don’t make long-sleeved shirts here with sleeves my length. Or they didn’t; now, when I wear a tie maybe once a decade, there are a couple “Big & Tall” options, but even then it’s difficult to find long sleeves. The Thais just don’t believe humans could possibly have arms my length.

I don’t care how old you are.

I don’t care what profession you are in.

I don’t care how common it is in your office or what your coworkers wear.

I don’t care how nice the tie or shirt is.

Don’t care how hot it is.

Even in uniforms where it may be authorized (military). Just because it’s authorized doesn’t mean its a good choice.

Guys running around in short sleeve shirts with ties on look ridiculous and are almost impossible to take seriously. If I can’t trust you to make the most basic decisions when dressing yourself how can I trust your opinion on important topics in the workplace?

The old men running around out there doing it. Where are their families? Please. Help your elders.

(I think I may have forgotten the ONLY time it’s okay to wear a short sleeve shirt with at tie. That’s when you are wearing a jacket over the top so people can’t see the short sleeves but you want to keep a little cool. If you take the coat off you BETTER take off the tie too.)
