Drinking soda cans through a straw

Is it a NYC thing to drink cans/bottles of soda through a straw? I’ve never seen people do this anywhere else.

I’d imagine you’d probably choke on the bottle or can if you tried that.

I assume that you mean the contents of said cans and bottles.

You’d have to stop walking for a fraction of a second to get a drink out of a can without spilling it on yourself. If it weren’t for straws they probably couldn’t drink at all duing the day.

Haj

One way of drinking things through a straw is to ‘shotgun’ it. Basically, instead of the liquid glugging out of the bottle, the straw allows the air to escape so the contents rush out all in one, draining a 330cl bottle in about 2 seconds! Not to be used with alcoholic beverages. Honest, guv’nor

I see this all the time, in many places. I personally use a straw because over the course of several years of excessive soda drinking, my front teeth became so brittle that I was constantly chipping them and having them re-capped. I pretty much gave up soda entirely, but when I do have one I use a straw in an attempt to bypass as many teeth as possible. I also know several people who are squeamish about putting their lips directly on a can, which has been sitting God-knows-where, for how long, under what conditions. A friend of mine always washed the lips of her cans at home and used a straw when she bought one to drink elsewhere. I thought it was a bit much at the time, but considering the recent goings-on it’s probably not a bad idea.

I’d say that outside of the USA it’s more unusual to see someone drink straight out of a can. Usually a straw is used, or the contents are delivered into a glass or some other container. Drinking straight from the can is viewed as unhygenic.

In some countries when you buy a drink the can or a portion of a bottle is poured into a plastic bag, and you use a straw to drink from the bag. This way the merchant can make a small amount by reselling the can, or subdividing a 2 litre bottle.

I hate drinking carbonated beverages with a straw. Somehow it seems to end up ultra-carbonated. I always pour it into a cup.

Emigrated to the Big City circa 1984. Yeah, they’ve got a straw fetish up here all right. I’ve had straws handed to me along with my BEER, as well as soda, V8 juice, orange juice in the carton, COFFEE for God’s sake…

Where I came from, straws were for milk shakes and fountain sodas (the kind that go in the cups with the plastic lids) ONLY. Bottled, canned, or cartonned (cartoned?) drinks are supposed to be supped from their containers.

I’d rather use a straw for almost any cold drink when I’m out and about, especially if I need to look good.

  1. less chance of spilling if you’re walking, etc.
  2. less chance of spilling period (I have an occasional, um, drinking problem with pop cans)
  3. don’t particularly want to rub off my chapstick/lipstick any more than I do anyway.

Yeah, I’m, uh, neatness challenged. You wanna make somethin of it?
