Drinks you've never had but would like to try

Any cocktails, mocktails, or soft drinks you’ve never had, but have wanted to try?

I’ve always wanted to try an Aqua Velva, but I never remember when I’m at a bar.

Same with a Harvey Wallbanger. I mostly just want to order it.

I was just thinking about that a few days ago. A well known drink that has all but disappeared. I’m not even sure what it is.

Ingredients: 1 1/2 oz (3 parts) Vodka, 1/2 oz (1 part) Galliano, 3 oz (6 parts) Fresh orange juice

Preparation: Stir the vodka and orange juice with ice in the glass, then float the Galliano on top. Garnish and serve.

Served: On the rocks; poured over ice

Standard garnish: Maraschino cherry, Orange slice

Drinkware: Highball glass

I haven’t had Galliano since I was a kid. No one I knows drinks that either anymore.

I’ve had neither a “Sloe Gin Fizz” nor a “Bloody Mary,” but I’ve often thought of trying them. I gave up my “serious” drinking in the 1980s after enjoying dry martinis much too often, became a wino and never looked back.

At about $50,000 a bottle, a single pour of Old Rip Van Winkle 25 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon, neat. A typical 750 ml bottle has 16 pours, that makes that one drink cost about $3,125.

The Bloody Mary is much hotter now. It went from a dash of Tabasco in the 80s to using a spicy mix now and often a few extra dashes of Tabasco. My stomach doesn’t allow me to drink them any more.

We’ve got a stupid-ass huge bottle of Galliano at home that my gf’s ex-husband bought. We occasionally have Harvey Wallbangers even though neither of us like them. Still 1/2 bottle of Galliano left.

As far as the OP, I’ve spent more than my share of time in bars and have tried pretty much every drink I’ve wanted. Never done a shot of Angostura bitters in Wisconsin, though. I’d like to try one.

Never tried a Negroni before. Seems like one of those ‘classy’ drinks the hoi polloi enjoy.

It’s easy to make, having only 3 ingredients in a 1:1:1 ratio and an orange peel garnish. But, gin I could repurpose if I didn’t like the Negroni, but Campari and sweet vermouth I wouldn’t know what else to do with.

ETA: I looked up the term ‘hoi polloi’ to make sure I was using it correctly. Interestingly, it turns out to have two meanings that are basically the opposite of each other. My intention was #2:

  1. the general populace : masses
  2. people of distinction or wealth or elevated social status : elite

It’s my gf’s drink she orders in a “nice” bar. (we rarely go to “nice” bars, my preference leans toward the dive end of the spectrum)

I do enjoy a good negroni. Excellent pre-dinner drink. Good way to wake up the palate.

My choice for the thread: I would like a glass of 1982 Château Pétrus Pomerol. Or a bottle. Or a case.

Sweet vermouth is for Manhattans when it’s cool and negronis when it’s warm.

I was given a Manhattan many years ago, and thought it was quite good. I haven’t had one since because I seldom go to bars. I usually drink Rusty Nails, Old Fashioneds, and Mint Juleps that I mix myself at home.

One cocktail I’d like to try is a Negroni. Yesterday, I learned about the Negroni sbagliato invented at a tavern in Florence. They both sound interesting.

I would really like to try a Romulan Ale.

Super America used to sell a reasonable facsimile of it. Cream soda the color of Windex.

Out of sheer morbid curiosity: an Alaskan Polar Bear Heater.

Has anybody here ever had Moxie, or known someone who had?

As a New Englander I tried Moxie as a child and hated it. I can’t really remember the flavor though to describe it. My father would drink it by the 2 liter.

Mint Julep–I’ve heard of this one all my life, especially, of course, during the Kentucky Derby, but I’ve never had one.

An MJ is delicious and very refreshing on a hot, muggy summer’s day. It should be so cold that the glass it’s in is sweating. From what I understand, an MJ is traditionally served in a silver mug.

You can add Mojitos to the list of cocktails I make at home. They’re similar to MJs, but made with soda water and white rum instead of spring water and Kentucky bourbon.

The Negroni has seen a renaissance in the past few years, lots of brunchy places have it. But Campari lasts forever, though the sugar content can crust up the cap. Vermouth doesn’t last long but it’s also dirt cheap at every grocery store.

Considering this semi-Chicago-based website, I’ve never tried Jeppson’s Malört but would like to because I like to challenge myself. I don’t like many bitter things, Campari straight is not fun. But some are quite pleasing like Aperol and Becherovka.

I have. It was interesting, to say the least. Kind of tasted like pink bubblegum, as I recall, but with some sour notes. I didn’t like it, but I guess some people do.
