I have to side with the clueless one on this, and not for the first time. I genuinely hope we won’t get pointless frills like avatars and graphics and other bandwidth-sludgifiers (though there does seem to be high demand for a puking smiley). The current format is adequate, though delivery could be faster/more reliable.
If the paid memberships were a requirement for survival, fine. But the membership here is quite intelligent, so don’t dangle goodies-to-be-named-later before us, expecting us to salivate. Tuba’s I’ll-try-to-overlook-your-transgressions-(this time) stance is more hostile than generous.

Please, please… No avatars or animated graphics. The value of this place is in the content of the messages. All that other nonsense detracts from that, loads down the servers even more, and uses up bandwidth.
If you want to increase the feature set for the paid users, do it in ways that add value - give us the ability to edit messages, or speed up the site, or allow private mail, or something like that.
The Straight Dope has a very nice, very clean user interface. Don’t muck it up with lots of bling
I’ll tell you what I’d like, although I know you’re at the mercy of the software developers here. I’d like the ability to log on, click ‘download new posts’, then go to an editor on my computer to read them and reply to them. Then click ‘upload replies’. Oh, that would be sweet. We had that ability with TapCIS on CompuServe 15 years ago. It was universally loved.
I don’t want an edit feature. I NEED an edit feature.
