Drug Scandal- Australian Sport

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/feb/07/australian-doping-sport-drugs

This is a shameful day for sport, I hope those that are involved will be caught by the authorities. It also makes me wonder about athletes who want to push themselves to the limit, and the peer pressure that is no doubt put on some players to take the drugs so they will be as good as their team mates.

Surely Australia isn’t the only country with sporting teams that has been infiltrated by dodgy scientists and crime gangs? What are the chances of it happening in America? Or Europe? Or even Asia?

Never.

Why?

I believe sisu was using sarcasm. Evidently you haven’t heard of baseball’s problems with steroids or cycling’sLance Armstrong.

I’m glad the Australian Football League is on the front foot: War on sports scientists

Good day for cycling I guess!

yep it is every sport you can think of, “someone will always cheat”. To reach the top of anything you must be be part sociopath. Although I am saddened by what is happening to my beloved game of AFL I am not surprised in the least. I am around sport at a local/regional level and yes I see it happening all too often.

Or Chinese soccer officials jailed for match fixing, or at least 700 European Soccer games fixed, or Doug Barron suspended by the PGA, the list is a long and sad story…

I just assume that every sport does all the drugs.

It’s a bit of a worry.

I’ve been keeping a eye on my oldest son and recently he’s has been noticeably “bulking” if you know what I mean. So I’ve been keeping tabs on his movements and there is this one place he seems to visit far too frequently. The fridge.

I checked it out and was shocked, shocked I tell you at what I found.

Peptides, polysaccarides, blood fractions, volatile fatty acids, growth hormones, steroids, stimulants, plant extracts and oleoresins. Most of it looked innocuous but I’m sure some of the fuzzy green stuff in the back corner hasn’t been approved by WADA.

It’s patently performance enhancing because whenever he’s played sport without getting his pick-up fix from there he’s played like a busted arse.

Buggered if I know what to do.

Yet another example of demanding nothing but success from people and then screaming bloody murder when they do something to get there.

It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when the next scandal will explode. I’ve always wondered how is is the obviously-pumped-full-of-steroids-NFL has managed to avoid a PR disaster so far. I suspect we’ll be hearing from the NHL soon.

Sorry- did not see this thread before I made my own.
Here is my 2 cents-
A report by the ACC has brought about a storm in a teacup in Australia.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/spor…-1226573479553

I recommend reading the full report which can be accessed through any of the major news sites.

I have read the whole ACC report and it is dull. Bear in mind also that some peptides are not banned by WADA.

Here are the quotes I have found in it -

“…suggested a potential threat…”

“…potentially committed anti-doping rule violations…”

“…may also be using peptides…”

“Multiple players …are suspected.”

“…possibly including peptides.”

“…possibly in breach of WADA anti-doping rules.”

“Multiple players (in one code) from a number of clubs are suspected of currently using or
having previously used peptides, which could constitute an anti-doping rule violation.”

“…levels which were possibly in breach of WADA anti-doping rules.”

“…may have resulted in match fixing.”

Unless they start naming names and clubs and banning people this report is hot air. In a years time people will have forgotten it.

“I didn’t get where I am today by selling ice cream tasting of bookends, pumice stone and West Germany.”

Clean out yer’ fridge: that fuzzy green stuff is surely toxic.

That’s it. It’s a government-sponsored ‘Shock Horror’ at this stage. It will all be forgotten in a month or so when the footy starts.

If names come out, then we’ll pay attention. At the moment, the information supplied looks like it was sourced from Internet forums. Absolutely nothing that hasn’t been hinted at, whispered in pubs, or outright stated anonomously a thousand times.

Then why hold a press conference if they have nothing?

Pre-empting a leak from Essendon FC that they have notified the AFL of a concern perhaps?

Make a big fuss and then when the truth comes out everyone says “see not that bad really”. Fairly straight forward PR exercise, they can’t deny it so pump it up first.

Bit like the letter written by the girl at UNi saying how she’s pregnant on drugs etc etc and then says only joking I got a C.

Drugs in sport is and always will be with us, I want it controlled as I have kids who play sport and don’t want them to suffer the long term effects of drugs but I am not shocked etc. It’s fairly common knowledge who is on the juice in local sporting circles.

There you go … didn’t even need to wait until the season started.

For Peter Fitzsimons’ take on it:
No beat-up, just a god-awful mess
