Most famous for his work with Chic and the Power Station, Tony Thompson has died of renal cell cancer. When I think of Tony’s work, it always makes me think, that’s what thunder would sound like if God had used a little hi-hat.
I was reading through the paper last night when I noticed the name “Tony Thompson” and thought, “Can’t be the one I’m thinking of,” but sadly it was. Apparently, he died on November 12.
Tony also played drums for Led Zeppelin a few times, during special reunion concerts. Whenever rumors of a true Zeppelin reunion surfaced, his name was always mentioned as the new drummer.
While I’m glad Zeppelin remained true to their original decision never to reunite, I think Bonzo would’ve been pleased with Thompson as a replacement.
Tony Thompson played drums for Zeppelin when they did Live Aid (I think Phil Collins may have sat in as well, but dwelling on that possiblity makes me want to vomit so I will not pursue it any further).
When Robert Plant was asked how the rehearsal had gone (I think Live Aid was the first time they had played post Bonzo) he replied something like: “Two and a half hours of Tony Thompson.”
Tony Thompson kicked some serious (b)ass (pedal). Whoever hired him to fill in for Bonham should be thanked. I remember watching the Live Aid show and being impressed. I think, tho, Ol’Gaffer, that you dis Phil Collins undeservedly. I’ve not been too taken with his solo material, but his drum work with Genesis is certainly above average. He has a rather heavy style as well, although I bet he had studio assistance and I bet Tony Thompson didn’t even need a frggin’ mic.
